No. 8 Long Beach State Takes Down UC Irvine For Third Straight Black And Blue Victory

Robert Lopez Duart scored six goals in the Long Beach State victory.
IRVINE, Calif.— The Long Beach State men's water polo team was victorious for the third time against UC Irvine this season behind an outstanding game from Robert Lopez Duart. The Freshman's six-goal performance was enough to push the Beach past the Anteaters, 10-9.
Long Beach State came out as the aggressor with Evan Cain finding the back of the net in under a minute of play. A Bruno Chiappini goal would give the Beach a two-goal lead before a UC Irvine goal would cut the deficit to one. Robert Lopez Duart scored his first of the game to restore the two-goal lead and make the score 3-1 heading into the second quarter.
The two teams battled defensively in the second quarter with only three goals scored between the two teams. Lopez Duart broke the deadlock with 4:33 left in the half to give Long Beach State a 4-1 lead. UC Irvine would get a goal back, but Evan Cain capitalized on an Anteater exclusion to score his second goal of the game and make the score 5-2 at halftime.
Needing a response, UC Irvine came out aggressively to start the second half as they scored four straight goals to give them a 6-5 lead. Robert Lopez Duart would score his third goal of the game to put Long Beach State back on the scoreboard, but a late UC Irvine goal gave them a 7-6 lead headed into the final quarter. The Beach defense stood strong on powerplays in the first half, however the Anteaters were able to break through in the third quarter with three of their five goals being scored in six-on-five advantages.
In the fourth quarter, Robert Lopez Duart took over. The freshman scored two goals to open the quarter, giving the Beach an 8-7 lead. UC Irvine would tie the game with a goal, but Lopez Duart would find the back of the net for a sixth time to maintain the one-goal lead. The Anteaters would respond once again, but a Bruno Chiappini goal sealed the win for Long Beach State, 10-9.
The win improves Long Beach State to 14-7, with their season continuing with two top-five matchups next week. Long Beach State will face off against No. 4 USC on Thursday, and No. 2 California on Saturday.
