Juaron Watts-Brown struck out 16 on his way to becoming the first Dirtbag to ever throw a complete game no-hitter.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Juaron Watts-Brown made history on Sunday, throwing the first ever complete game no-hitter and second ever no-no in program history. He struck out 16 on the afternoon as well, finishing one shy of the all-time program record.
The only other no-hitter in Dirtbags history is a combined no-hitter by Chris Mathewson and Darren McCaughan on March 1, 2015.
The headline says it all as Long Beach State (21-25, 10-11 Big West) picked up the series finale victory to sweep UC Riverside (7-36, 3-21 Big West) on Sunday afternoon. The final score of the ballgame was 4-0, marking the team's fifth shutout of the season.
The Hanford native needed 114 pitches to make history, with 75 going for strikes. The only thing against him all day was a walk in the top of the fourth inning. The 16-strikeout performance is the most by a Dirtbag pitcher since Jered Weaver set the record with 17 back on May 7, 2004. It also marks the first complete game shutout by a freshman since Weaver on May 19, 2002 and first CG by any Long Beach State pitcher since Chris Mathewson on May 16, 2015.
That is also now back-to-back double-digit strikeouts for Watts-Brown as he has racked up 26 in his last 15 innings on the mound.
The Dirtbags' offense got things started early with a Chase Luttrell two-RBI double in the bottom of the first. They added two more runs in the sixth on a Tyler White bases loaded walk and Eddie Saldivar sacrifice fly.
The series sweep over UC Riverside marks the fifth in a row for Long Beach State, as they extend their win streak against the Highlanders to 17 consecutive games. Overall, it is their fourth win in a row and they have now won six of their last seven.
The Dirtbags will play their final midweek game of the season next week and wrap up their nine-game home stand with USC on Wednesday night.
