Dirtbags Extend Win Streak to Five with 11-5 Win over USC

Long Beach State end their home stand with seven wins in nine games, including five straight.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (22-25) ended their nine-game home stand with an 11-5 victory over USC (24-22) on Wednesday night. The win marks the fifth straight for the Dirtbags and seven of their last eight games.

USC got the scoring started right away with an unearned run in the top of the first, but the Dirtbags responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead and never let up.

The big inning came in the third as Long Beach State sent 10 to the plate, scoring five runs and jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Eddie Saldivar and Sebastian Murillo both came through with two-RBI singles in the inning along with a bases loaded walk.

The Trojans responded with four runs in the top of the fourth to cut into the deficit, but once again the 'Bags answered with a two-RBI single from Connor Burns in the bottom half.

Nothing happened for either side for the next three innings with the 9-5 score holding until the bottom of the eighth. After a Jonathon Long walk and Chase Luttrell single put two runners aboard, Saldivar split the left-center gap and dove safely into third for a two-RBI triple.

On the mound, Ethan Clough, Jonathan Carlos, Dalton Ponce, and Matt Fields combined for 5.1 shutout frames surrendering six hits while striking out eight. Clough picked up his first victory of the season with 1.1 innings allowing just one hit while striking out one.

Four Dirtbags posted multi-hit efforts led by Saldivar's 2-for-4 day. The freshman recorded a career-high three runs scored and four RBI to go along with a walk.

Rocco Peppi and Tanner Carlson both registered three-hit nights in the victory. Peppi reached in all five of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a double, walk, hit by pitch, and two RBI. Carlson was 3-for-4 on the night with three runs scored.

The Dirtbags end the home stand with wins in seven of their nine games and will hit the road for the first time since April 24 as they head to CSU Bakersfield for a three-game set with the 'Runners.
