For the second consecutive year, Jason Smith has qualified for two events at the NCAA Championships.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Long Beach State saw four student-athletes in action on day three of the NCAA West Prelims on Friday. For the second consecutive year, Jason Smith has qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events after posting a program top ten mark in Triple Jump.
Day Three Results
Competing in his second event of the day and third of the week, Smith was outstanding in Triple Jump. In his first attempt, he was just shy of his lifetime-best at 50-10.25 but then improved with each of his next two jumps. His second attempt was a new PR of 51-11, but only lasted moments as he went 52-7.25 in his third and final jump of the day. It is the sixth best Triple Jump mark in program history. He finished eleventh overall advancing him to the championships in Oregon.
In his first event of the day, Smith cleared the first two bar heights, 2.05m and 2.10m, without any issues. Unfortunately, he clipped the bar on all three of his attempts at 2.15m eliminating his chance at qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The sixth year senior finished the day in 17th place for High Jump.
Alec Jones led the trio of Beach Discus throwers finishing two spots shy of qualifying for the championships. After faults on his first two attempts, he posted a mark of 54.59m (179-1) putting him just 10 inches shy of the twelfth and final qualifying position. The senior ends his Beach career as a two-time Big West champion and two-time Regional qualifier while ranking in the outdoor top ten for both Discus and Hammer.
Not far behind him was Charlie Vernoy, finishing the day in 17th place. The senior captain launched the disc 53.93m (176-11) on his second attempt, finishing three feet shy of qualifying for the championships. He ends his Long Beach State career as a three-time Big West champion, three-time Regional qualifier, and ranks in the top ten in both Discus and Hammer.
The third and final thrower, Sebastian Coleman, posted a throw of 50.07m (164-3) to round out the group. The 2022 Hammer champion faulted on his first two throws before posting his official mark that put him in 38th overall.
Long Beach State concludes the NCAA West Prelims tomorrow with three student-athletes in competition in Fayetteville.
