This year, the University of Arkansas is the host school with competition taking place Wednesday through Saturday. The Beach will have eight of their athletes competing on Wednesday and Friday, one on Thursday, and close it out with three on Saturday.
Headlining the group is two-time Outdoor All-American, Jason Smith, who qualified in three events. The three-time Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Year will compete in Long Jump, High Jump, and Triple Jump becoming the 12th LBSU student-athlete to be in three or more events in one regional, and the first to compete in three different jump events. Regionally, he ranks eighth in Long Jump, 24th in High Jump, and 29th in Triple Jump.
The trio of Charlie Vernoy, Alec Jones, and Sebastian Coleman are each set to compete in two events as all three qualified for both Hammer and Discus. As a team, the Long Beach State throwers rank second in the nation in both events. This will be Vernoy's and Coleman's third West prelim after qualifying for Discus in both 2019 and 2021 while it will be Jones' second. All three rank in the top 13 among the Discus throwers going to Fayetteville, while Coleman ranks 20th in Hammer to lead the group.
A fourth thrower, Marcos Gonzalez, will be making his second consecutive NCAA West Prelim in men's Javelin. The senior launched a lifetime-best throw at the Big West Championships to earn his spot in the postseason. He ranks eighth among the regional qualifiers.
Ryley Fick made history last week being becoming the first ever Women's Track Athlete of the Year in Long Beach State history. The women's 3000m Steeplechase school record holder finds herself in that event at NCAA West for the first time in her career, ranking 40th among the qualifiers. She is also the first LBSU women's distance runner to qualify for the western prelims since 2013.
Michael Phillips ranks the highest among the LBSU track qualifiers with the 22nd best time in the 1500m Run. The junior transfer posted the school record for the event this season in addition to claiming the Big West title. He along with Mohammed Mohamed will represent the Beach distance squad, with Mohamed qualifying in the 800m Run. He ranks 26th for the event.
The Beach will send a pair of hurdlers to Fayetteville as well, with Joseph Anderson qualifying for the men's 110m Hurdles and Rahni Turner qualifying for the women's 100m Hurdles. Anderson ranks 33rd amongst the prelim competitors while Turner ranks 36th. They are the first LBSU hurdle pair to qualify since the 2019 season.
Crystal Washington and Imani Carmouche will represent the women's team on the field in Arkansas, qualifying in Triple Jump and High Jump, respectively. The duo won the Big West titles in their respective event two weekends ago and are set to appear in the first West Regionals of their careers. Carmouche owns the eighth best mark in High Jump, while Washington ranks 30tha in Triple Jump.
