5/25/2022 7:41:00 PM | Track and Field

With an eighth-place finish, Jason Smith has qualified for his third NCAA Championships appearance.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Long Beach State started competition at the NCAA West Preliminaries with seven athletes in action on day one at the University of Arkansas. Jason Smith was the headliner of the group, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Long Jump for the third time in his career.

Day One Results

Smith improved on each of his three jumps, finishing with a final mark of 7.76m (25-5.25) on his third attempt. The jump was good enough for an eighth-place finish to qualify for his third championships appearance. He has back-to-back appearances after qualifying last year as well as a sophomore in 2018. He is the first Beach student-athlete to qualify for back-to-back championships since Courtne' Davis did it in 2018-19.

A two-event qualifier last year, the San Bruno native will have a chance to repeat the feat, competing in both High Jump and Triple Jump on Friday.

Sebastian Coleman led the trio of LBSU hammer throwers to open day one of the NCAA West Prelims, finishing 29th overall with a first round throw of 61.86m (202-9). Charlie Vernoy improved each round, finishing 38th in the event at 59.78m (196-1) while Alec Jones ended up in 42nd at 59.17m (194-1). All three will be back in competition on Friday in the Discus throw, where they all rank in the top 13 among those competing in Arkansas.

Competing in his second West prelim, Marcos Gonzalez posted a throw of 61.69m (202-4) in Javelin. With a 27th place finish, he has notched consecutive top 30 efforts in back-to-back years at the NCAA Regionals.

Out on the track, Michael Phillips competed in the 1500m Run prelim for the first time in his collegiate career. The junior transfer finished ninth in the fourth heat with a time of 3:51.16 giving him a 39th place finish overall.

The final competitor of the day was Mohammed Mohamed in the 800m Run for the first NCAA Regional of his career. The junior transfer finished eighth in his heat with a time of 1:53.83 for a 43rd-place finish overall.

Long Beach State continues the NCAA West Prelims tomorrow with just one student-athlete in competition. Rahni Turner will represent the Beach in the women's 100m Hurdles in Fayetteville starting around 4:00 p.m. PT.
