No. 7 Seed Long Beach State Set to Face No. 2 Seed Cal Poly on Thursday at Big West Conference Tournament

The Beach and the Mustangs will go head-to-head at noon on Thursday, April 28 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –
The 2022 Big West Women's Tennis Championship begins today, but Long Beach State, the No. 7 seed, will begin its quest for the Tournament Title on Thursday, April 28 at 12 noon when the Beach face No. 2 seed Cal Poly at the Barnes Center in San Diego, Calif.

Long Beach State enters the Big West Tournament with a 9-10 overall record and a 4-5 Big West Conference mark. While, the Beach's opponent Cal Poly is ranked No. 73 overall with a record of 15-6 on the year, and an 8-1 league mark.

"We had a number of close conference matches this season that did not go our way," LBSU Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "We are looking forward to the tournament and a second chance."

About the Beach
  • Long Beach State closed out the regular season on a high note as the Beach swept UC Irvine last Saturday at Rhodes Tennis Center
  • This season, LBSU has been led by lone senior Zara Lennon who has compiled a 17-10 overall singles record and a 15-6 doubles ledger when paired with Sheena Masuda.
  • The duo of Lennon and Masuda are currently ranked No. 78. The pair also boast an 8-1 Big West Conference record, and are 13-4 when playing at flight one.
  • Lennon turned in a spectacular Senior Day performance as she led the Beach to a sweep over the Anteaters. The Grand Bay, Mauritius native picked up a 6-1, 6-2 singles win over UCI's Jessica Tsukiki, after winning doubles with Masuda, 6-2, en route to earning her 100th career victory at Long Beach State.
  • With the exception of Lennon, the Beach roster is full of underclassmen as LBSU has three redshirt freshman and three true freshman on the squad.
About Cal Poly
  • The Mustangs recorded a strong Big West Conference showing as they breezed through the competition entering the final regular season match of the year with an 8-0 league mark.
  • Closing the season out against No. 25 UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly saw its eight-match conference win streak snapped as the Mustangs dropped a 4-1 contest to the Gauchos.
  • The No. 73 Mustangs are led by Kim Bhunu who has an 11-5 singles record when playing in the first flight.
  • In doubles, Bhunu is paired with Emily Ackerman and the duo is 13-4 at the No. 1 flight.
  • At the second flight in doubles is the tandem of Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette who own a 10-4 record.
About The Big West Tournament
  • The 2022 Big West Women's Tennis Tournament will be played at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif., for the first time ever.
  • Previously, the Big West Conference Women's Tennis Tournament was held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
  • This year, the Big West Women's Tennis Tournament will be played from April 27-30.
  • The nine-team bracket will see the No. 8 and 9 seeds play a first-round match to advance to the quarterfinals to take on Top-seeded, and reigning conference champion, UC Santa Barbara.
  • In Long Beach State's most recent Big West Conference Tournament appearance in 2019, the third-seeded Beach won their 13th title as they defeated the reigning champion, Hawaii, in an exciting 4-3 come from behind victory.
