Upset Bid Comes Up Just Short Against Cal Poly

The season comes to a close after falling to the second-seeded Mustangs in the quarterfinals.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State won in the top flight of both singles and doubles, but the depth of Cal Poly came through to push the Mustangs past the Beach in the Big West Tournament in a 4-1 decision.
"We had a great fight on the court today," said Jenny Hilt-Costello. "We were very close to an upset but came up just a little short. I'm proud of our team and how they battled today."
Sheena Masuda and Zara Lennon continued their spectacular play in doubles with a 6-1 win in the top flight over Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu, ending the season with a 14-4 record in dual match doubles play for Long Beach State (9-11). Cal Poly (16-6) rallied to take the doubles point, as Delanie Dunkle and Melissa LaMette won 6-3 against Peppi Ramstedt and Nikola Homolkova and Laura Bente and Peyton Dunkle took the third flight by the same score against Claire Le Du and Zuzanna Szczepanska.
Peyton Dunkle picked up the first singles win for the Mustangs in the sixth flight, winning 6-2, 6-2. Homolkova brought the team score closer with a 7-5, 6-3 win in the top flight over Bhunu, but the Mustangs pulled within one match of victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win in the third flight between LaMette and Masuda.
The remaining three matches all went to three sets. Ramstedt had bounced back from a first set loss and was cruising in the third, up 3-0 on Delanie Dunkle and Lennon and Bente were all square in the third set at 3-3 in a tight match, but Cal Poly clinched the win with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 win by Ackerman over Le Du in the fourth flight.
Long Beach State finishes the 2021-22 campaign with a 9-11 overall record as the young team, featuring seven freshman and just one upperclassman gained valuable experience.
