Late Rally Comes Up Short in Dirtbags’ Loss to No. 13 UC Santa Barbara

4/23/2022 5:31:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State fell 3-2 on Saturday afternoon losing the series to the first place Gauchos.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Long Beach State (15-22, 5-9 Big West) rallied late against No. 13 UC Santa Barbara (26-9, 15-2 Big West), but fell short in a 3-2 loss. With the loss, they have dropped their fifth consecutive series.

A pair of solo home runs get the scoring started for the Gauchos in the bottom half of the third against Dirtbags starter, Marques Johnson. Those were really the only mistakes by the right-hander though as he tossed five innings, allowing the two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out seven in the no decision.

Long Beach State's offense was held in check until the seventh as a Tanner Carlson single and Tyler White walk got the inning started. A sac bunt would move them into scoring position leading to a Sebastian Murillo sacrifice fly to put the Dirtbags on the board. With two outs, Tyler Porter was called on to pinch hit and the redshirt junior came through. A single into left center scored White and tied the ballgame up at two.

In the bottom half, a pair of quick flyouts set up a one-two-three inning until a Jordan Sprinkle single extended the inning. Originally called a caught stealing at second base, replay review would overturn it and extend the inning even more. An error on the next pitch put runners on the corners before an RBI single gave UCSB the lead back.

The Dirtbags loaded the bases in the eighth on two walks and a hit by pitch, but a strikeout ended the rally and stranded all three.

Still chasing one, a hit by pitch and walk gave Long Beach State a great start in the ninth. Unfortunately, after a pitching change, a pair of strikeouts and a flyout ended the ballgame, giving the Dirtbags a 3-2 loss.

Chase Luttrell recorded one of three hits with a double down the right field line that actually broke up a no-hitter in the sixth inning. He also walked in a 1-for-4 effort.

Long Beach State will look to salvage a win in the series and end the eight-game losing streak in the series finale tomorrow afternoon. First pitch in Santa Barbara is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
