Phillips Sets School Record in Azusa, LBSU Wraps up Day One of Beach Invitational

Michael Phillips set a new program best in the men’s 1500m to headline five new LBSU top ten marks.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – On day one of the prestigious Beach Invitational, the Beach saw three new top ten marks but the biggest headline of the day came at the Bryan Clay Invitational where Michael Phillips set a new program record.
Running in the men's 1500m, Phillips shattered his previous personal best by five seconds with a time of 3:41.08. The mark also represents the fastest in Long Beach State history surpassing a record that had stood since 1978 held by Armando Cendejas.
In the same race, Alex Kalmar posted a time of 3:46.95 beating his previous lifetime-best by almost two seconds. With that mark, the freshman moves up to number six on the program's all-time rankings.
On the women's side, Brieanna Tafoya also had an impressive showing in the 1500m. The senior set a new lifetime-best of 4:36.22 beating her previous mark by over two seconds.
Back at the Jack Rose Track for day one of the Beach Invitational, Keeley Rasmussen posted a phenomenal throw of 54.63m (179-2) in the women's Hammer. The mark broke her lifetime-best by over four feet and moved her into seventh in the LBSU record books.
Another thrower that entered the program's top ten was Marcos Gonzalez in men's Javelin. The senior surpass his lifetime-best by over two feet on his way to a top ten finish. His mark of 63.33 (207-9) is tied for tenth on the all-time list.
The fifth and final program mark the Beach saw on Friday was Tiana Prince in the women's 3,000m Steeplechase. The junior already ranked in the top ten, but improved her time by over six seconds running the race in 11:21.41. She now ranks eighth in Long Beach State history.
The trio of Sebastian Coleman, Charlie Vernoy, and Alec Jones once again had a solid day finishing as the top three Big West competitors in the men's Hammer. Ryan Hernandez also had a great day one finishing as the top conference athlete in the men's 10,000m with a time of 32:32.17.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, Joseph Anderson had a great pair of performances including a new lifetime-best in the men's 400m Hurdles. He also finished as the second fastest Big West runner in the 100m Hurdles.
LeNaya Griffin (400m), Kaitlyn Williams (100m), and Rahni Turner (100m Hurdles) were also in action at the Mt. SAC Relays finishing in the top two spots among Big West runners.
