The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate serves as a sort of warm-up for the prestigious Beach Invitational for the weekend. The one-day meet draws some of the top competition at not only the collegiate level, but the professional level as well as almost 1,000 competitors will be in action at the Jack Rose Track throughout the day. The PCI takes place all day on Thursday with action on the field beginning at 8:00 a.m. and track events starting at 2:15 p.m.
After COVID cancelled it the last two years, the Beach Invitational returns for the 26th year since its inception. Another massive meet hosted by Long Beach State, the two-day event will feature thousands of competitors at all levels from high school to Olympic hopefuls. Widely considered as one of the most prestigious track and field events in the nation, the Beach Invitational will have competition all day on Friday and Saturday.
As they do every year, Long Beach State sends some of their distance runners to the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific University. Ricky Villa and Ryley Fick will begin the week in the 3000m Steeplechase on Wednesday afternoon. Raymon Ornelas and Allie Scimia will compete on day two in the 5000m races. And on Friday night, Michael Phillips, Connor Phillips, Alex Kalmar, and Brieanna Tafoya will all race in the 1500m races.
The Beach will be represented in the sprints and hurdle events at the Mt. SAC Relays this week. Rahni Turner, Kaitlyn Williams, and LeNaya Griffin will be racing for the women's team in the sprints and hurdles while Joseph Anderson will go for the men's side in both the 110m and 400m Hurdles.
As mentioned before, Long Beach State is coming off a dominant showing in the Challenge Cup last weekend. The men's victory marked their second consecutive cup and 21st overall while the women's victory was their ninth overall and first since 2015. Both the men and women finished with 205 total points in their victories. For the women, it's the highest point total by any team to raise the cup since 2012 and most for the program since 2008. On the men's side, it is the most points by a winner since 2015 when the Beach won with 222 points.
The Beach had three more athletes earn Big West weekly honors in addition to their Challenge Cup victories. Joseph Anderson won his first career award at Long Beach State bringing home the Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Charlie Vernoy earned his second Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor while LeNaya Griffin won her second Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
