Dirtbags Outhit No. 2 Oregon State, but Fall in Series Opener

Long Beach State recorded six hits to the Beavers’ four, but could only muster up one run.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Long Beach State (15-17) dropped the series opener at No. 2 Oregon State (25-7) despite outhitting the Beavers on Thursday afternoon. The Dirtbags have now lost four of their last five games.
Walks really hurt the Long Beach State pitchers as Marques Johnson walked four Beavers, including one with the bases loaded for the first run of the game in the third inning. With the bases still loaded, a single up the middle plated two more as Oregon State found themselves up 3-0 at the end of three innings.
Johnson settled in a bit retiring six of the next seven hitters before he was pulled in the fifth. He finished the day with 4.2 innings pitched, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out six.
From one-right hander to the next, Juaron Watts-Brown took over for Johnson and threw 3.1 hitless innings. The redshirt freshman walked three and struck out six, but kept the Dirtbags in the ballgame.
Chase Luttrell was responsible for what would end up being the only LBSU run with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning. It is the sixth of the season for the fourth year junior as he moves into a tie for the team lead.
The Dirtbags brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a groundout ended the game securing the 3-1 victory for the Beavers.
Luttrell was 1-for-4 on the night with the home run as he and Rocco Peppi led the offense. Peppi notched another multi-hit effort going 2-for-4 in the opener. The redshirt freshman has recorded two or more hits in seven of his last nine games.
Game two at Goss Stadium between Long Beach State and No. 2 Oregon State will be at 5:35 tomorrow afternoon.
