Track and Field Posts Seven Top Ten Marks on Day One in New Mexico

Long Beach State had a record setting first day at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –The Long Beach State track and field team had a very strong first day at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Friday. As a group, they totaled seven new program top ten marks, led by five Beach field athletes.
Day One Results
Charlie Vernoy and Alec Jones continue to dominate the events they compete in together with another one-two finish in the men's 35-pound Weight Throw. Vernoy threw a lifetime-best of 20.86m (68'5.25") to improve on his program second-best mark. Jones also climbed up in the top ten, moving up to sixth with a mark of 19.96m (65'6").
On the women's side, Clare Gibson had a strong 2022 debut clearing 1.76m (5'9.25") en route to a victory in the women's High Jump. It marks a new lifetime-best for the senior and the sixth best mark in program history.
In pole vault, the duo of Maggie Lear and Mikayla Ray both cleared 3.71m (12'2") in women's Pole Vault. It is a new personal best for both of them and puts them in a tie for the sixth best in program history.
Out on the track, Ryley Fick and Allie Scimia entered the indoor all-time top ten in the women's 3000m Run. Fick finished with an altitude adjusted time of 9:53.79 putting her at seventh all-time while Scimia's altitude adjusted time of 10:00.10 marks the tenth fastest.
Other great performances on the day include Kash Powell and Alex Kalmar in the men's 600m. The duo finished second and third with times of 1:20.68 and 1:21.37, respectively.
Sebastian Coleman posted a new lifetime-best in the 35-pound Weight Throw with a toss of 18.71m (61'4.75"). The junior finished fourth in the event, less than a foot shy of third.
Calista Apostol also had a strong day in women's High Jump finishing third with a mark of 1.66m (5'5.25") just shy of her lifetime best. Hailey Fune was just behind her in the standings, clearing 1.61m (5'3.25") for a new personal best and a fifth place finish.
The Beach will close out the New Mexico Collegiate Classic tomorrow with the field events beginning at 8:30 a.m. and track events starting at 9:00 a.m.
