Long Beach State Wins Three Times On Day 1 Of MPSF Championships

Beach Entries Break Two School Records

Day 1 Results

SPOKANE, Wash.—
Three individual titles and a pair of school records highlighted day one for Long Beach State at the MPSF Championships at the Podium.
 
WOMEN
Claudine Raud-Gumiel set a school record of 3,977 points as she won the pentathlon. Raud-Gumiel and Hailey Fune' tied for first in the opening 60m hurdles as both ran 8.39 (1,041 points). Tori Plummer posted a career-best 9.04 in the event to finish 10th (902 points).
 
Raud-Gumiel cleared 5-7 in the high jump, the 10th-highest jump in school history. That mark earned her 855 points and a second-place finish. Fune' went 5-5 3/4 to place fourth (818 points) in the high jump. Plummer (5-3 1/4, 747) was seventh.
 
Fune' led the way in the shot put as she recorded a season-best 34-2 (556) to finish sixth. Plummer came in seventh (34-1 1/4, 555) while Raud-Gumiel was eighth (34-0 1/4, 554).
 
Raud-Gumiel finished third in the long jump with a leap of 19-1 1/2 (798). On her last attempt, Fune' went 18-8 to score 756 points. Plummer posted an eighth-place showing (17-4, 637).
 
Heading into the 800m finale, Raud-Gumiel led Fune' by 77 points and UC Irvine's Jolie Robinson by 79. Raud-Gumiel ran 2:27.15 to clinch the title and the school record. Robinson's 2:27.97 gave her fifth and allowed her to move to second overall. Fune' did not finish the race after leading midway through. She scored 3,171 points to place 13th. Plummer finished ninth (3,446).
 
Giszelle Hrehor won the weight throw with a career-best toss of 64-2 1/4. Her throw is the second-longest in school history.
 
Trinity Barnett finished third in the 200m in a time of 23.81. Earlier in the day, she ran 7.33 to win her 60m heat and advance to the finals. Her time was the quickest, by almost 2/10's.
 
Long Beach State scored twice in the pole vault as Jonelle Scott placed third (12-11 3/4) and Grace Stoddart was eighth (11-9 3/4).
 
Rahni Turner (8.42) and Raud-Gumiel (8.46) both won their heats of the 60m hurdles to advance to Saturday's finals. Fune's 8.50 was the fifth-fastest time, earning her a spot in the finals.
 
Fune' and Raud-Gumiel both came back out for the long jump. Fune' went 19-0 1/2 to earn fourth place. KiiKii Brown's 18-11 3/4 resulted in fifth, while Tayah DeSousa's 18-11 1/4 was sixth. Raud-Gumiel finished eighth (18-6).
 
Marikay Schwab put up the ninth-best 5000m in school history, 17:22.80, to miss scoring in ninth place.
 
The distance medley relay of Leia Jones, Isela Ochoa, Jadyn Palaschuk, and Mackenzie Hack recorded the fifth-fastest time in school history, 11:57.25, to earn ninth.
 
As a team, Long Beach State is 1/2 point out of first. Oregon State is leading at 46.5, followed by LBSU with 46.
 
MEN
Kyle Jankans won his third consecutive MPSF high jump for the Beach. Jankans cleared seven feet indoors for the first time since 2023, going 7-0 1/4. AJ McGlofin also cleared 7-0 1/4, but it took Jankans two attempts to make the height, compared to three for McGlofin. Both made three attempts at 7-2 1/4 but could not clear the mark.
 
Tristyn Flores broke the school record in the 60m, running 6.74 in the preliminaries. He ran the third-fastest time in the prelims to advance to the finals. Flores returned in the 200m, posting the second-quickest time in school history, 20.96, to take sixth in the finals.
 
Micah Norfles recorded a season-best 64-1 3/4 to finish second in the weight throw. Also recording season-bests were Tyler Knowles and Cannan Wharry. Knowles was fourth, posting a toss of 60-8 1/2, while Wharry went 60-3 3/4 to earn fifth place.
 
The distance medley relay of Kyle Reden, Malik Harness, Jay Brown, and Cameron Gill placed second in the fourth-quickest time in school history, 9:55.56.
 
Cytres Vives and TJ Funches cleared 6-8 1/4 in the high jump. Vives was credited fifth place as he reached the height with fewer attempts. 
 
Quinten Flowers placed seventh in the long jump (23-0 1/2).
 
Aidan Turner began the heptathlon by running a career-best 6.90 (918 points) in the 60m to win the race. Ryan Gregory's 7.04 (868 points) was second, while Milo Orona's 7.24 (799 points) earned him third place.
 
Gregory won the heptathlon's long jump competition with a season-best leap of 23-3 1/2 (838 points). Turner was second (23-1 3/4, 826 points)) while Orono posted an indoor career-best 22-9 3/4 (802 points) to place third.
 
Turner won the heptathlon's shot put as he posted a toss of 43-6 1/2 (684 points). Orona came in third (40-11 3/4, 636). Gregory was fourth (38-8 1/4, 594).
 
In the day's final event, the high jump, Gregory was second, clearing a season-best 6-6 3/4. He was awarded second behind Cal State Fullerton's Keith Orona, who cleared the height in one fewer attempt. Both scored 803 points. Orona recorded a new indoor career-best in the high jump, 6-5 1/2, to finish third (776 points). Turner was fourth (5-11 1/2, 644).
 
Heading into day two, Gregory leads Turner by 31 points (3,101-3,072). Milo Orona is third with 3,013 points.
 
Orona, Gregory, and Turner returned for the pole vault, joining teammate Glen Quayle. Quayle finished third (15-5). Orona was fourth with an indoor-best 14-5 1/2. Gregory and Turner tied for fifth at 13-5 1/4.
 
As a team, Long Beach State is in second with 65 points. Washington State leads with 71.
The MPSF Championships conclude Saturday morning, beginning at 10 a.m.
