LBSU Wins Three Times On Final Day Of MPSF Championships

Beach set five new school records to record two top-three finishes

SPOKANE, Wash.—Long Beach State won three individual events and set four school records on the final day of the MPSF Championships as both Beach programs recorded a pair of top-three team finishes Saturday at the Podium.
 
MEN
Aidan Turner repeated as the heptathlon champion. The heptathlon began on Saturday with the 60m hurdles, where Turner won the race with a season-best 8.06 to earn 967 points. Ryan Gregory's season-best 8.25 resulted in 920 points for a second-place showing. Milo Orona also ran a season-best, 8.79, to record 793 points as he finished fourth in the race.
 
In the heptathlon's pole vault, Turner passed on the first five heights before clearing 14-5 ¼ to secure the win in the event. He passed again 14-9 to try his hand at 15-1, making the height on his third attempt. He passed at 15-5 to go to 15-9. Turner could not clear 15-9, so he scored 790 points.

Orona passed on the first two heights before clearing 13-5 1/4. After passing at 13-9 ¼, Orona failed to advance past 14-1 1/4. Gregory passed until 13-9 1/4, where he could not clear the height of his three attempts and did not score.
 
The final event of the heptathlon was the 1000m. Gregory won the race, going 2:46.95. Orona ran 2:52.54 to finish second. Turner clinched the title by running 3:10.22. Turner ended the competition with 5,364 points, the second most in school history. Orona was second with 5,162 points, the sixth-most in school history. Gregory's 4,828 points resulted in a third-place finish and the eighth-most points in school history.
 
Quinten Flowers led three LBSU scorers in the triple jump. He was third at 48-11. Tola Spencer was fifth after going 46-8 3/4, with TJ Funches recording a leap of 45-10 3/4 to place seventh.
 
Tristyn Flores lowered his school record in the 60m finals to 6.73 to finish fifth.
 
Jaylon Wells finished fourth in the shot put (54-4).
 
Vincent Jones recorded the second-fastest 400m time in school history, 47.26, to win his heat and place fourth overall. Omri Shiff ran the ninth-fastest time in school history, 47.83, in his heat to score eighth.
 
Cristian Martinez (1:53.18) and Jay Brown (1:53.65) finished seventh and eighth in the 800m, respectively.
 
The 4x400m relay, comprised of Patrick Henderson, Shiff, Flores, and Vincent Jones, broke the school record by running a time of 3:12.12. The old mark of 3:12.13 was set during the 2015 season. The team finished fourth.
 
Long Beach State finished second in the team-scoring race with 124 points. Washington State won the team title after scoring 162 points.
 
WOMEN
The top seed in the 60m finals, Trinity Barnett, lowered her school record to 7.27 to repeat as the MPSF Champion in the event. Her performance is now the 33rd fastest in Division I.
 
Sofia Lavreshina repeated as the 400m champion, winning the race by breaking her school record, running 53.53. Her time is a new MPSF record in the Podium, the host site for the past three seasons.
 
Leia Jones ran the fifth-quickest 800m time in school history, 2:11.12, to finish third on the Podium.

In the 60m hurdles finals, Long Beach State went 3-4-5 with Rahni Turner (8.42) leading the way. Hailey Fune' (8.48) and Claudine Raud-Gumiel (8.50) followed.
 
Maren Butler threw the shot 46-4 to earn a fourth-place showing.
 
KiiKii Brown reset her career-best in the triple jump to 38-5 1/2 to place seventh.
 
The 4x400m relay of Turner, Barnett, Milani Bell, and Lavreshina broke the seven-year-old school record in the event (3:46.14) with a time of 3:43.58. Long Beach State took home third place.  
 
Long Beach State finished third in the team race. The Beach scored 100 points, but Oregon State won the team title with 128.5 points.
