Long Beach State could not avoid the sweep to the Hornets.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 6 ranked Dirtbags (2-4) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but a pair of late inning home runs propelled Sacramento State (7-0) to the 5-4 victory on Sunday.
Juaron Watts-Brown started on the mound for Long Beach State in the series finale and turned in a brilliant start. In just his second career start, he tossed 6.2 innings and surrendered just one run on two hits and a walk while striking out eight Hornets. He left the game in the seventh in line for his first career victory.
Offensively, the Dirtbags were off to a hot start plating four runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to an early 4-0 lead.
After three infield singles, Tanner Carlson stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and promptly sent a ball toward the left-center gap for a two-RBI single. Eddie Saldivar stepped into the box next and after a quick two-strike battle, sent a ball into right field plating two more.
The 4-0 lead would hold for the Dirtbags until the seventh. With two outs, Coach Valenzuela went to the bullpen to bring in Devereaux Harrison. The first batter he would face would end the shutout with an RBI single up the middle.
The next two innings would not fair any better for the sophomore closer, as a three-run homer would tie it in the eighth and a solo homer gave the Hornets the lead in the ninth.
Long Beach State threatened in the bottom half of the ninth with runners on first and second, but a groundball to short led to a game-ending double play as Sacramento State took the finale, 5-4.
The Dirtbags will look to bounce back with a Tuesday matchup at UCLA. First pitch from Jackie Robinson Stadium will be at 7:00 p.m.
