No. 22 Dirtbags Set for Midweek Matchup with No. 20 UCLA

Long Beach State will play their first midweek game since 2020.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State will look to get back to their winning ways as they head to Los Angeles for a midweek matchup with No. 20 UCLA.

LAST TIME OUT
• After shocking the nation on opening weekend, the Dirtbags were then stunned in week two falling victim of a sweep at home by Sacramento State. All three games were one-run games decided by late-inning home runs.
• On Friday, Luis Ramirez extended his scoreless streak to 13 consecutive innings, but got a no decision as the game headed into extra innings tied at zero. In the top of the tenth, Sac State connected on a solo homer to take the opener, 1-0.
• In game two on Saturday, the Hornets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead that held until the Dirtbags put up four runs in the seventh to tie it up. Unfortunately, Sac State responded with a solo shot in the eighth to win it 5-4.
• Looking to salvage a win, Long Beach State jumped out to the early 4-0 lead on Sunday. Juaron Watts-Brown was brilliant tossing 6.2 innings, striking out eight, and only allowing one run. The Hornets would connect for a three-run home run after the pitching change to tie it it in the eighth and another solo homer in the top of the ninth for another 5-4 victory.

• After two weeks of action, the Dirtbags still find themselves in the rankings despite by the sweep and dropping a lot of positions.

• It is the first time the Dirtbags have been ranked in three consecutive weeks, since March of the 2020 season right before the season was cut short.
PRESEASON FAVORITES
• The Big West Conference announced the results of the preseason coaches' poll on Monday and the 'Bags were tabbed as the favorites in the league. They received 7 first-place votes and 97 total points.
• It marks the first time Long Beach State has been voted as the favorites since the 2008 preseason poll when they topped rival Cal State Fullerton by three points.
• UC Irvine (3 first place votes, 92 points) and UC Santa Barbara (1 first place votes, 81 points) also received first place votes and round out the top three in the poll.
AGAINST THE OPPONENT
• This midweek matchup with UCLA marks the 116th meeting between the two programs. The last time these teams faced off was May 7, 2019.
• Long Beach State trails 46-69 in the all-time series and are 19-37 at the home of the Bruns. The last Dirtbags win at Jackie Robinson Stadium was May 8, 2018.

• UCLA had a busy week last week, going 3-2 with midweek losses to Pepperdine and Omaha before sweeping UC Riverside.
• The Bruin pitching staff has been outstanding to start the 2022 campaign. As a staff, they own a 2.49 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. In 76 innings, they have totaled 94 strikeouts to just 21 walks.
