Dirtbags Cannot Overcome First Inning UCLA Homer, Fall 3-0

3/1/2022 10:19:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State fell in their top 25 matchup on Tuesday night.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 22 ranked Dirtbags fell 3-0 in their Tuesday night matchup to No. 20 UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Long Beach State is now 2-5 on the season after their fifth consecutive loss.

All the damage was done in the first inning as a walk and a hit batter put two UCLA runners aboard against Dirtbags starter, Noah Carabajal. The sophomore then left a fastball up in the zone that was sent over the wall in left field for a three-run homer.

That 3-0 Bruin lead held for the rest of the night as UCLA's Thatcher Hurd and Ethan Flanagan combined for nine shutout innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out 19 Dirtbag hitters. Hurd went five scoreless with 12 strikeouts in his midweek start.

The Dirtbags pitching staff matched up with UCLA for the majority of the night as Kaden Moeller, Marques Johnson, Josh Haley, and Ray Cebulski combined for seven shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Moeller made his collegiate debut on the mound with 2.2 innings surrendering just one hit and a walk while striking out a pair. For Johnson, it was a huge bounce back appearance after a rough start last time out. The right-hander finished 2.1 scoreless innings with just one hit and one walk allowed while striking out three. Haley and Cebulski each tossed a scoreless inning in their Long Beach State debuts.

At the plate, Eddie Saldivar and Chase Luttrell collected the only hits for Long Beach State with a pair of singles in the top of the fourth. That marked the Dirtbags' best scoring opportunity on the night as they ended up with the bases loaded, but a strikeout and flyout would leave them loaded.

The Dirtbags will look to end this four-game losing skid this weekend as they host North Dakota State for a three-game series. First pitch of game one will be 6:00 pm on Friday night.
