Dirtbags Suffer Sixth Straight Loss

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 22 ranked Dirtbags suffered their sixth straight loss on Friday night, falling 5-4 to North Dakota State in the series opener.
Jonathon Long got the offense to a great start with a home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Long Beach State an early 1-0 lead. The solo blast went 445 feet for his third homer of the season.
Unfortunately, the Bison would tag Dirtbag starter Luis Ramirez for a pair of unearned runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth. It is the first runs given up by the right-hander this season. He finished with five innings pitched, allowing seven hits, three runs (one earned), while striking out six.
Long Beach State would answer back with a rally in the bottom half of the fifth. After an 11-pitch at-bat, freshman Peyton Schulze singled into center followed by a Chris Jimenez pinch hit single to put two runners aboard. To the plate came Rocco Peppi, who missed his first career home run by mere inches to drive in two runs and tie the game at 3-3. With two outs, Eddie Saldivar came through with a two-strike knock up the middle to plate Peppi and give the Dirtbags the lead.
In the sixth, Ethan Clough took over on the mound for LBSU but was tagged for a pair of runs by North Dakota State as the Bison jumped back in front 5-4.
That lead would hold as NDSU's Tristen Roehrich worked out of a jam in the ninth to finish off 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and give the Dirtbags their sixth straight loss. It is the fourth one-run loss of the streak and fifth straight by three runs or less.
Game two will be tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
