Long Beach State Wins Thrilling Road Contest at UC San Diego

Four Beach players scored in double-figures to lead the Beach over the Tritons in a closely contested game

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Down two points with 17.6 seconds remaining, Long Beach State came out of a timeout and gave the ball to Kianna Hamilton-Fisher who sunk a three at 11.4 seconds on the clock to lift the Beach to a 60-59 victory over UC San Diego at RIMAC Arena on Thursday night.
The Beach (18-5, 11-4 Big West) won a crucial back-and-forth affair against the Tritons (10-14, 7-8 Big West) to stay tied for second place in the Big West standings with UC Irvine as the Anteaters picked up a 54-51 win over Cal State Fullerton.
Long Beach State and UC San Diego battled each other throughout the game as neither team led by more than eight points. The evenly matched game saw the Beach shoot 35.3-percent from the field, while the Tritons shot 35.1-percent. UCSD held the edge in rebounding (42-41) and blocks (5-2), while LBSU picked up nine steals to the Tritons' five. The conference foes were tied 16-16 in assists.
The Beach started the game off strong and held a 7-point lead (18-11) at the end of the first quarter. But the Tritons went on an 8-0 run in the second frame to take a 27-22 advantage. The UCSD lead would not last, as Long Beach bounded back with an 8-0 run of its own highlighted by a pair of threes from Savannah Tucker to close the first half leading 33-29.
Tucker's solid first half gave her a new career-high with 11 points as she was one of four Beach players to score in double figures on the night.
In the second half, UC San Diego rattled off seven straight points to regain the lead, 38-37. During that run, the Tritons held the Beach scoreless for more than five minutes as UCSD took a five-point lead (44-39). Hamilton-Fisher ended the scoring drought with a driving layup to make it a one-possession game (44-41) with 1:36 remaining as the Beach headed into the final quarter down, 46-43.
Down by six (53-47) with 7:44 on the clock, the Beach closed the gap with their tough defense. Justina King collected a steal and ran it back for a layup to make it a four-point game (53-49). Then on the next possession, Maddi Utti grabbed a steal and passed it off to Hamilton-Fisher who laid it in making it a two-point contest (53-51).
After UCSD went back up by four (55-51), King drained a three at 4:23 to keep the Beach close. However, the Tritons would go back up by five (59-54) with 1:57 remaining after Sydney Brown made both her free throws. Jasmine Hardy completed the three-point play to bring the Beach within two (59-57) and LBSU called a timeout with 17.6 seconds on the clock to draw up the potentially game-winning play.
Enter Hamilton-Fisher who was passed the ball from Utti with 11.4 seconds on the clock just beyond the arc and drained the three to give Long Beach State the lead, 60-59.
A timeout by UCSD was called by three layup attempts from the Tritons in the final seven seconds of action did not fall as the Beach held on to win the game.
King and Hardy led all scorers with 13 points each, while Tucker added 11, and Utti finished with 10 points to go along with as many rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. King led the squad with six assists, while Utti added four to go along with three steals, and a block.
UCSD had three players score in double-digits as Aishah Brown, Madison Baxter, and Sydney Brown all tallied 12 points. Aishah Brown finished with a double-double as she added 13 boards to go along with three blocks.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Walter Pyramid in a crucial game against UC Irvine. The conference foes bring identical 11-4 Big West records into the contest with conference tournament seeding implications on the line as both are tied for second place.
Tip-off for the Black and Blue Rivalry is set for 4 p.m. LBSU will honor its four seniors in Jasmine Hardy, Justina King, Emily Sullivan, and Maddi Utti in pregame senior day ceremony.
