Long Beach State Falls to UC Irvine in Black & Blue Rivalry on Senior Day

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Basketball team dropped a 70-47 contest to UC Irvine on Saturday evening at the Walter Pyramid to drop into third place in the Big West Conference standings.
Prior to the game, Long Beach State (18-6, 11-5 Big West) recognized their four seniors in Jasmine Hardy, Justina King, Emily Sullivan, and Maddi Utti.
UC Irvine (17-10, 12-4 Big West) moved into second place in conference standings heading into the final week of the regular season.
The game started out slowly as neither team shot over 30-percent in the first quarter. UC Irvine scored the first points of the game, but went on a seven-minute scoring drought, as Long Beach State took a 6-2 lead. However, the Beach also hit a scoring drought as they went four minutes without scoring, before taking a 10-6 lead at the end of the frame.
The second quarter was the difference maker in the game as UC Irvine found its groove and shot 55-percent from the field. With the game tied 20-20, the Anteaters went on a 14-0 run to close the first half and take a 34-20 lead over Long Beach State into the locker room.
Following halftime, UC Irvine brought the same momentum back to the court and went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead over LBSU to 41-20. Despite being down by 20 points, the Beach continued to play their game and tallied six-straight points to make it a 41-26 game with 3:18 remaining, before trailing by 19 (49-30) at the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Beach trail by as many as 25 (62-37) in the frame before Long Beach State ultimately fell, 70-47.
Patricia Chung came off the bench and led the Beach in scoring with a season-high 11 points, while Savannah Tucker added eight points, and King recorded six. King also led the squad with four assists and five steals. Utti, meanwhile, was the team's leading rebounder with eight boards to go along with four points, three assists, two steals, and a block.
UCI had three double-figure scorers in Kayla Williams (18 points), Naomi Hunt (13 points), and Chloe Webb (10 points). Williams also contributed eight rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
Long Beach State heads into the final week of the regular season on the road as the Beach play at UC Davis on Thursday, March 3 at 6 p.m., before closing out the year at UC Riverside on Saturday, March 5 at 6 p.m.
