Beach Women's Basketball Faces CSUN, UC Santa Barbara in Pair of Home Contests
The Long Beach State Women's Basketball team hosts a pair of home games this week. The Beach will face CSUN on Thursday, February 17 at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid, before welcoming UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, February 19 at 4 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Saturday's game as we Play 4 Kay.

COVID-19 Notes
• If you are coming to the Walter Pyramid this season, please allow for extra time to enter the venue due to COVID-19 protocols as well as parking. Parking payment can be done in two ways, either at the parking machines on site or via the Parkmobile App. Masks are required inside the building, and either proof of vaccination or a negative test is required for all entry.

• Long Beach State has had two non-conference games canceled in December, and two Big West conference games canceled in January due to COVID-19 protocols. 

 About the Beach
• Long Beach State went 1-1 last week as the Beach moved to 16-4 on the year and 9-3 in Big West action.
• The Beach have dropped into third place in the Big West, as Hawaii sits atop the standings with an 8-2 league record, while UC Irvine is in second place with a 10-3 conference mark.
• Heading into the week, Long Beach State is 7-2 when playing inside the Walter Pyramid this season.
• LBSU was chosen to finish fourth in the Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll and second in the league's preseason media poll.
• The Beach leads the Big West Conference in seven statistical categories this season. Long Beach State sets the standard in scoring defense (54.95), scoring margin (+8.80), field goal percentage (.408), assists per game (14.90), steals per game (12.15), turnover margin (+9.10), and assist/turnover ratio (1.16).
• In addition to leading the Big West, Long Beach State also leads the nation in turnover margin (+9.10). 
• While the Beach set the standard in turnover margin, they also rank in the top 10 nationally in fewest turnovers (257), and steals per game (12.2) as they are sixth and eighth, respectively.
• Individually, senior forward Maddi Utti leads the Big West in steals per game with 3.37, which is good for fifth in the nation.
• Junior guard Justina King has also been phenomenal this season as she leads the Big West in assists per game (4.80).
• LBSU has three players averaging double figures in Maddi Utti (14.5 ppg), Justina King (12.2 ppg), and Jasmine Hardy (10.6 ppg)
• Utti is also the team's rebounding leader with 8.9 boards per game, while leading the squad with 64 steals and 19 blocks.
• King distributed a career-high 10 assists last week at Cal State Fullerton. She now leads the squad in assists with 96.
• Long Beach State has officially changed the nickname for all sports other than baseball to Beach with the NCAA. Please do not refer to LBSU basketball as the 49ers.

Player Notes
Maddi Utti is Long Beach State's leading scorer with 14.5 points per game. She also leads the squad with 8.9 rebounds per game, 64 steals, and 19 blocks. This season, she has recorded five 20-point performances, led the Beach in scoring 11 times, registered six double-digit rebounding games, and has notched five double-doubles. She has also been named Big West Conference Player of the Week on three separate occasions.
Justina King is the Beach's second leading scorer with 12.2 points per game on the season. She also leads the team with 96 assists for an average of 4.80 to lead the Big West. King now ranks in a tie for 14th all time at Long Beach State with 1,222 career points.
Jasmine Hardy had a career-game against Seattle as she poured in a career-best 29 points on 11-of-14 made field goals and 7-of-9 made threes. She became just the fourth player in the Jeff Cammon era to reach at least 25 points in a game. Last week, Hardy tallied 22 points in the Beach's win over Cal State Fullerton as she recorded her second 20-plus point performance of the season and third of her career. She is now averaging 10.6 points per game to rank third on the team. 
Ma'Qhi Berry has been a force on the court this season contributing on both sides of the ball. Offensively, she averages 8.7 points per game with 58 assists, to go along with 2.7 rebounds per game. On the defensive end, Berry owns 10 blocks, while adding 27 steals. At CSU Bakersfield, Berry poured in a season-high 18 points as she connected on 6-of-9 field goals.
Kianna Hamilton-Fisher has been an integral part of the Beach offense this season. She has come off the bench and averaged 8.0 points per game to go along with 2.7 rebounds per game, 34 steals, 31 assists, and eight blocks. 
Lauren Green has earned the start in 15-of-19 games this season and has played an important role on the court. Although her numbers aren't overpowering (2.3 points per game, 2.2 rebounds per game and 10 steals), Green is a play maker. She makes things happen for the Beach both offensively and defensively and is a key component to the squad's success.
• Freshman Savannah Tucker has also played an important role for the Beach and has worked her way into the starting five in the last two games. This season she is contributing 2.1 points per game, 0.7 rebounds per game, six steals, three assists, and one block on the year.
Patricia Chung is another cog in the Long Beach State wheel of success as the freshman guard is averaging 1.9 points per game and 0.7 rebounds per game. The scrappy Chung has helped contribute to the Beach's solid defensive efforts with a pair of steals and her stout defending.
Kristyna Jeskeova is another key factor to the Beach's deep bench. At UC Santa Barbara, the sophomore forward tied her career-high with 12 points to go along with five rebounds. Jeskeova is now averaging 1.5 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game.
Thea Mikkelsen came to the Beach all the way from Roskilde, Denmark and in her collegiate debut tallied 10 points against Biola. Since her 10-point showing in the season opener, Mikkelsen has averaged 1.7 points per game, 0.6 rebounds per game, while adding four assists, and two steals in 66 minutes of action.
Emily Sullivan has also been on the court in 14 games this season for a total of 62 minutes in which she has contributed 14 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.
Brandy Huffhines made her collegiate debut for the Beach in the season opener against Biola. She has since seen action against Seattle and Air Force. In three games, she has seen 21 minutes of action and is averaging 0.7 points per game and one steal.
• Redshirting for Long Beach State this season are freshmen Shelby Ray and Teodora Popovic.

Scouting CSUN
• CSUN brings an 8-13 overall record into the Walter Pyramid. The Matadors are 4-7 in Big West Conference play.
• The Matadors went 1-1 last week with a 56-55 loss to Cal Poly, followed by a 53-52 victory over CSU Bakersfield.
• CSUN is led by both Tess Amundsen (12.3 points per game) and Jordyn Jackson (11.0 points per game).
• Leading the Matadors in rebouning this season is Kayanna Spriggs who is averaging 5.5 boards per game. She also adds 13 steals, 10 blocks, and eight assists to go along with 6.2 points per game.
• CSUN's Anaiyah Tu'ua leads the squad with 56 assists, while also contributing 6.5 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, 34 seals, and five blocks.
• Defensively, Sydney Woodley has swiped a team-leading 65 steals to go along with 7.0 points per game, 3.1 rebounds per game, 27 assists, and five blocks.
• Also contributing on the defensive end is Meghann Henderson who leads the team with 13 blocks. She also adds 21 steals, 17 assists, 3.8 rebounds per game, and 3.6 points per game.

The Series: The Beach vs. The Matadors
Long Beach State and CSUN will meet for the 66th time in program history. The Beach lead the all-time series 43-22. However, the Matadors earned the win earlier this season when CSUN defeated LBSU, 64-50, at the Matadome. The Beach is looking for their first win over CSUN since Jan. 18, 2020 when LBSU won, 60-52, at the Walter Pyramid.

Scouting UC Santa Barbara
• UC Santa Barbara comes into the week with a 13-7 overall record and a 7-4 ledger in Big West Conference action.
• The Gauchos have won their last three contests with victories over UC San Diego (59-47), CSU Bakersfield (59-47), and Cal Poly (73-40). The have also won five out of their last six games.
• UCSB has three players who are averaging double figures in Ila Lane (11.9 points per game), Danae Miller (11.2 points per game), and Alexis Tucker (10.6 points per game).
• In addition to leading the team in scoring, Lane also leads the Gauchos in rebounding (9.3 rebounds per game) and blocks (18).
• Miller is the team-leader in assists with 60, while also adding 4.2 rebounds per game, 17 steals, and three blocks.
• Johnni Gonzalez, meanwhile, leads the Gauchos with 21 steals this season to go along with 4.5 points per game, 2.4 rebounds per game, 52 assists, and three blocks.

The Series: The Beach vs. The Gauchos
Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara will face off for the 109th time in program history. The Beach lead the all-time series 55-53 and have won the last three meetings as the Gauchos will be looking for their first win over LBSU since Feb. 29, 2020.

King of the Court
Justina King has been solid, not just all season, but throughout her Long Beach State career. The junior guard from Scarborough, Canada has made her way into the LBSU Record Books with 1,222 career points to tie for 14th all-time. If that weren't enough, she just cracked the top 10 in three-pointers made with 115, and free throws made with 273. Additionally, King leads the Beach with 96 assists to average a conference-leading 4.80 assists per set.

Hardy Makes it Look Easy
Junior Jasmine Hardy has recorded a pair of 20-point games this season to bring her season average to 10.6 points per game. This year, Hardy has registered nine double digit scoring games, and has led Long Beach State in scoring twice. With her career-high 29-point performance, she became just the fourth player in the Jeff Cammon era to score 25 or more points in a game.

Mad(di) Skills
Senior forward Maddi Utti has been outstanding for the Beach all season as she has been named Big West Player of the Week three times. On the year, she is averaging 14.5 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game. Her rebounding average is good for tops on the team and second in the Big West. She also leads the Beach with 64 steals and 19 blocks. After pouring in a season-high 25 points and 12 rebounds last weekend against Hawaii, Utti has now recorded five 20-point performances, 14 double-digit showings, six double-figure rebounding games, and five double-doubles. Utti has led the Beach in scoring 11 times this season and has led the squad in rebounding 18 times.

Next Up
Long Beach State will travel south to take on UC San Diego on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at the RIMAC Arena. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
