Beach Women’s Basketball Suffers Overtime Defeat to CSUN

Jasmine Hardy records her third 20-point game of the season in the setback

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Basketball team battled CSUN on Thursday night inside the Walter Pyramid. The conference foes fought each other through 14 ties and eight lead changes before the Beach came up on the wrong end of a 62-57 overtime loss.
The Beach (16-5, 9-4 Big West) and the Matadors (9-13, 5-7 Big West) played each other evenly throughout the contest as LBSU shot 41.3-percent from the field to CSUN's 45.0-percent. Long Beach out-rebounded CSUN, 27-25, and held the edge in assists, 14-13, but the Matadors led on steals, 17-12, and points off of turnovers, 18-13. However, the ultimate difference was made from beyond the arc as the Matadors converted 9-of-12 treys to shoot 75-percent from three-point range, while the Beach shot 35.3-percent from long distance as LBSU made 6-of-17 shots.
The slow starting game saw Long Beach State lead CSUN by two (9-7) at the end of the first quarter after a three from Jasmine Hardy gave the Beach the edge.
Both teams went on runs in the second quarter and after LBSU's 7-0 run, the Beach led the Matadors 18-12 at 6:31. However, CSUN would chip away at Long Beach State's lead making it a two-point game (23-21) at halftime.
The second half saw both teams' offenses heat up as the Beach shot 62.5-percent from the field, while the Matadors shot 63.6-percent. CSUN was led by Tess Amundsen who tallied 16 points in the third quarter alone to help the Matadors outscore the Beach, 23-18, in the frame as the Beach found themselves trailing 44-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
Despite Amundsen's strong showing, Hardy kept the Beach in the game as she tallied 17 points of her own in the first three quarters.
The two teams continued to trade leads back and forth in the final 10 minutes of regulation as neither team led by more than six points throughout the contest. CSUN held a 51-49 lead with two minutes remaining, but Maddi Utti made a second-chance layup with 1:36 left to even the score at 51-all, before heading into overtime.
The Beach battled in the overtime period as both teams shot 40-percent from the field connecting on 2-of-5 field goals. Both team also notched one three-pointer in the extra five minutes as Hardy drained one for the Beach and Meghann Henderson sunk one for the Matadors. The difference in the overtime frame seemed to be made at the free throw line as CSUN connected on 6-of-6, while the Beach went to the line only once and went 1-for-2, as Long Beach State dropped the competitive game, 62-57.
Hardy led the Beach with a total of 20 points to record her third 20-point game of the season, while adding six rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Utti also recorded double-digits with 13 points to go along with five boards, three steals, three blocks, and three assists. Ma'Qhi Berry dished out four assists to lead LBSU, while also contributing seven points, two rebounds, and a steal.
Amundsen led all scorers with a 32-point performance for CSUN, while Jordyn Jackson posted 12 points. Kayanna Spriggs posted six rebounds, while Ashley Hawkins dished out five assists, and Henderson led the squad with five steals.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 19 when the Beach host the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara in a Play 4 Kay Pink Game that will tip-off at 4 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
