Strong Fourth Quarter Lifts Beach Women’s Hoops Over UC Santa Barbara

Maddi Utti finished the game with a double-double leading three double-figure scorers in the win

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State scored 26 points in the fourth quarter while shooting nearly 70-percent in the frame as the Beach rallied to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 65-62, on Saturday evening at the Walter Pyramid.
The contest between Long Beach State (17-5, 10-4 Big West) and UC Santa Barbara (13-9, 7-6 Big West) was competitive from the start. The conference foes battled each other through seven ties and 12 lead changes over 40 minutes of action that saw the Gauchos shoot 45.2-percent from the field and the Beach shoot 44.6-percent.
The evenly matched game had UCSB leading in rebounding (30-29) and assists (13-12), while LBSU led in steals (10-6), blocks (4-0), and turnovers forced (20-13).
UC Santa Barbara came out shooting as the Gauchos shot 57.1-percent from the field in the first quarter and sunk 6-of-9 three-pointers to take a 24-17 lead over Long Beach State.
Long Beach State began chipping away at UCSB's lead in the second quarter and made it a one-possession game (27-24) on a fade away jumper from Maddi Utti at 5:32. Jasmine Hardy connected on a jumper two minutes later to give the Beach a 28-27 lead. Long Beach State held a 32-31 edge over the Gauchos heading into halftime.
The Gauchos exited the locker room and promptly went on a 9-0 scoring run taking a 40-32 advantage over the Beach. UCSB held Long Beach State to just seven points in the frame and outscored LBSU by 10 points to take a 48-39 lead after three quarters of action.
The Beach showed they were down but not out in the fourth quarter as they rattled off eight-straight points to make it a one-point game (50-49) with 5:53 on the clock. Hardy tied the game at 53-all with a jumper at 4:25, the gave Long Beach State a 56-55 lead with 2:59 remaining. The final three minutes went back and forth until Ma'Qhi Berry drained a three with 1:45 left to play giving LBSU a 61-57 advantage. Despite UCSB's efforts, the Gauchos were unable to regain the lead, as Long Beach State completed the come back with a 65-62 victory.
Utti led all scorers with 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds marking her sixth double-double of the season. She also added three steals and three assists. Berry concluded the game with 15 points, while Justina King added 14. King led the Beach with five assists, while Savannah Tucker posted two blocks.
Danae Miller was UCSB's leading scorer with 18 points, while Ila Lane added 15, and Alexis Tucker finished with 11. Lane also added seven boards, while Miller contributed six assists.
Long Beach State will travel to UC San Diego on Thursday, February 24 for a 7 p.m. game that will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
