The Beach is coming off sixth and seventh place finishes at the Big West Championships for the women's team and men's team, respectively. The women totaled 152 points while the men finished with 171 points.
Allie Scimia (second place) and Ryley Fick (ninth place) led the way as both earned All-Big West honors. It is the first time since 2011 Long Beach State had multiple All-Big West honorees and Scimia's runner-up finish was the highest individual placement since Rosa Del Toro won the women's 6K in that same 2011 season.
The duo has finished top ten in all five meets they have competed in this season and both have owned the school record at some point with Scimia currently owning the program's all-time best time.
On the men's side, it was the Phillips brothers pacing the team at the Big West Championships. Michael Phillips finished 19th while Connor Phillips finished 28th. Michael Phillips has been the fastest for the Beach men all season with top ten finishes in four of his five races, including a school record time at the Bronco Invitational.
Alex Kalmar and Quinn Garity have also had strong performances this season as both entered the Long Beach State all-time top ten earlier this year.
At last year's NCAA West Regionals, the men finished 23rd with 611 total points while the women were 24th with 661 total points. It was the highest finish for the women since the 2012 regionals.
The top two teams at each of the nine regionals will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships with 13 more at-large bids open for the remaining teams across the country. Individually, 38 additional runners have a chance to qualify for the championships if their team does not. Those individuals are chosen based on a top 25 finish and their team not earning an automatic bid.
This year's NCAA Championships will be held in Stillwater, Okla. on Friday, November 19.
