Furious Rally Runs Out Of Time As Long Beach State Drops Big West Opener To Hawai’i

1/8/2022 4:31:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Long Beach State pulled to within four in the final minute.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – After three cancelations, Long Beach State finally began conference play on Saturday. The Beach played host to Hawai'i, but the Rainbow Warriors had a big night from three which led UH to a 72-67 victory.

Long Beach State (4-9, 0-1 Big West) showed plenty of fight with a big late comeback. Down 16 after a pair of Hawai'i (5-5, 1-0 Big West) free throws after the under-four minute media timeout, Long Beach State closed the game on at 16-5 run.

Down 69-58 after a Joel Murray layup, the Beach continued to chip away. A basket and a pair of free throws from Jordan Roberts cut the lead to seven points, and after two UH free throws a three from Jadon Jones cut the edge to just six points. A missed front end and a Colin Slater lay-in would bring the Beach within four with 16 seconds to play at 71-67, but the charge simply ran out of time.
Slater led the Beach with 16 points while Joel Murray chipped in 15, but Hawai'i was dialed in from three on the night, shooting 44.1 percent from behind the arc and making 15 total on the night.

That success started early as four of the first six baskets the Rainbow Warriors made were from three, helping Hawai'i take an early 19-10 lead. Long Beach State would cut back into that lead with a run of their own however, taking back the lead on a 3-point play from Murray with 2:27 left in the first half.

That would be the last lead for the Beach however, as Noel Coleman buried a three in the closing seconds of the first half to make the score 32-27 at the break. Coleman, who led all scorers with 22 points, finished the night 6-for-11 from three, and played a big role in extending the lead in the early portion of the second half. Evenly split in his scoring between the halves, a Coleman three gave UH their biggest lead of the game at 60-41, helping the Rainbow Warriors build enough cushion to survive the late charge from the Beach.

Long Beach State will continue the current homestand with two more conference games next week. The Beach will host UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night before playing CSUN at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
