Long Beach State held UCSB to just 24 points in the second half to pick up the win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State won in classic fashion in the program's most-played series against UC Santa Barbara, holding the Gauchos to just 58 points while finishing the night a perfect 17-for-17 from the free throw line in a 65-58 victory.
Freshman Aboubacar Traore had a big night, scoring 17 points with seven rebounds and three blocks after returning to the starting lineup, while Joel Murray and Jadon Jones also finished in double-figures. Jones also had seven boards and three blocks to go with four steals, helping share the load defensively in a team-high 33 minutes.
Long Beach State (4-9, 0-1 Big West) jumped out to an early 10-5 lead after a Joel Murray 3-pointer, but UC Santa Barbara pulled back the edge and then took a five-point lead of their own at 22-17. The Beach was able to tie the score at 24-24, but the Gauchos ended the half on a 10-2 run to take a 34-26 lead into halftime.
Two turnovers led to two baskets for UCSB to start the second half, forcing Dan Monson to take a timeout after just 30 seconds as the Gauchos took a 12-points lead, 38-26.
That timeout fired up the Beach defensively and Long Beach State gave up just 20 points the rest of the way, including holding UCSB to 0-of-8 shooting from three in the second half. That allowed the Beach to climb back into the game, first tying the game at 52-52 and then taking the lead for good at 59-58.
A crucial steal from Jadon Jones gave the Beach the ball going into the final minute, and a Traore putback put the Beach up three. A key rebound from Jadon Jones gave the ball back to the Beach, and the perfect night from the line sealed the win. Over the final 10 minutes of the game, Long Beach State allowed UCSB to score just six points.
LBSU was perfect from the line for the third time in program history, and the first time since 1996 by going 17-for-17 from the line, with Murray, Traore, Joe Hampton and Colin Slater all contributing to the effort. The Beach also improved to 3-0 when holding an opponent under 70 points this season.
Long Beach State finishes their three-game conference homestand this weekend, hosting CSUN at 4 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid, live on ESPN+. The game is the front end of an LBSU doubleheader, as the Men's Volleyball program kicks off their season against Harvard immediately after.
