Men’s Basketball Drops CSUN 71-55 To Close Homestand

1/15/2022 7:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Freshman Aboubacar Traore recorded a double-double while Joel Murray led the team in scoring with 16 points.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State held CSUN to just 35.6 percent shooting and to 55 points, pulling away in the second half for a comfortable 71-55 win to finish out a three-game conference homestand inside the Walter Pyramid.

Long Beach State (6-9, 2-1 Big West) was led by Joel Murray who scored 16 points, while Jadon Jones added 15 and freshman Aboubacar Traore recorded his second career double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

It was the defense that was the star for the Beach, however, as Long Beach State kept a second straight opponent under 60 points and held CSUN (5-10, 1-2 Big West) to 35.6 percent shooting and forcing the Matadors into 17 turnovers.
Long Beach State raced out to an 8-0 lead, but hit a dry spell offensively that allowed the Matadors to pull back into the game, leading as late as the six minute mark at 20-18. A 6-0 run keyed by some free throw shooting put the Beach back out in front, and LBSU finished the first half on top 30-29.

Maintaining the defensive effort out of the locker room, the Beach went on another 8-0 run to start the half, and this cushion would hold as CSUN went 1-9 from three in the second half and never pulled closer than seven the rest of the way.
Jones scored 11 of his 15 in the second half while Colin Slater was the facilitator, making seven assists in the second 20 for Long Beach State.

The Beach will head on the road for one game on Thursday at UC San Diego on Thursday before returning to the Walter Pyramid for the Black and Blue Rivalry against UC Irvine. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
