The Beach had five in double-figures in the road win in the first ever game against the Tritons.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State rolled out to a big lead behind an excellent defensive first half, and found their offensive rhythm in the second to hold off UC San Diego in the first game between the new conference foes in an 87-69 win.
Long Beach State (7-9) had five players in double-figures, led by Colin Slater and Joel Murray who shared top honors with 20 points. Aboubacar Traore was a board shy of a double-double with 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks while Jordan Roberts and Joe Hampton each chipped in ten points.
UC San Diego (8-9) scored the opening basket of the game but Long Beach State roared into action, opening the game on a 14-4 run that set the tone for the contest. A Slater three would push the Long Beach State lead to 17 points at 29-12, but it was the defense that traveled for LBSU.
The Beach held the Tritons to just 21 points in the first half on 30 percent shooting, and LBSU had seven steals and four blocks in the first 20 minutes, taking a 41-21 lead into the locker room at the half.
UC San Diego made a push in the second half, getting their star Toni Rocak rolling as he would finish with 18 points. The Tritons pulled within five on two occasions in the second half, the latest coming at 65-60 with just over six minutes to play.
Long Beach State was able to return to their defensive ways, though, holding the Tritons to just two field goals the rest of the way to pull away down the stretch, with Slater's last basket sealing the win by pushing the Beach lead back to 18 in the final minute.
As part of Big West guidelines, while UC San Diego is playing a full conference schedule the games against the Tritons will not count towards the league standings.
Long Beach State returns to the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, hosting UC Irvine in the Black and Blue Rivalry. Tip time for that game has moved to 1 p.m., as the game will now be broadcast live on Spectrum SportsNet as the Big West Game of the Week.
