Beach Women's Hoops Hosts UC San Diego, Plays at UC Irvine
The Long Beach State Women's Basketball team welcomes UC San Diego to the Walter Pyramid on Thursday, Jan. 20 for a 7 p.m. contest that will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Jason Schwartz and Bill Herenda on the call. The Beach will then head to Irvine to take on the Anteaters in the Black and Blue Rivalry game on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Bren Events Center. The LBSU-UCI game will also be broadcast live on ESPN+,

COVID-19 Notes
• Long Beach State has had two non-conference games canceled in December, and two Big West conference games canceled in January due to COVID-19 protocols.
• Long Beach State Athletics will impose a temporary limit on attendance for indoor events inside of the Walter Pyramid for a two-week period from January 20 to February 3. This move has been taken to align with the latest California state guidance regarding indoor live events. Attendance within the building will be limited to 1,000. Entrance priority will be granted to season-ticket holders, as well as students who will continue to be granted entry. Team pass lists will continue to be honored for the families and friends of student-athletes and coaches, and for Men's and Women's Basketball, an extremely limited number of tickets will be sold in advance.
• Mask mandates remain in place in the Walter Pyramid and are anticipated to last throughout the season. Mask requirements will be upgraded to surgical, KN95 or N95 masks for all individuals aged 2 or older. Cloth masks, bandanas and neck gaiters will not be permitted.
• Concessions will be served in designated eating and drinking areas. Outside food will not be permitted; only closed water bottles are allowed. LBSU Athletics Clear Bag policy will continue to be enforced. The Pyramid will open 60 minutes prior to the game. Courtside seats will be removed; anyone with tickets in that area will be relocated to the best available location.
• Additionally, State of California regulations mandate all spectators for events inside the Walter Pyramid must provide either proof of vaccination (14+ days after last shot) or a negative COVID-19 test result (within 24 hours for a lab antigen test and 48 hours for a PCR test). That policy will be in place until further notice.
• If you are coming to the Walter Pyramid this season, please allow for extra time to enter the venue due to COVID-19 protocols as well as parking. Parking payment can be done in two ways, either at the parking machines on site or via the Parkmobile App.
About the Beach
• Long Beach State owns a 10-2 overall record and a 3-1 Big West Conference mark.
• The Beach are looking to get back on the winning track after dropping a road contest to CSUN last weekend.
• Long Beach State owns a 5-0 record when playing inside the Walter Pyramid this season. Meanwhile, the Beach are 3-2 when playing on the road.
• LBSU was chosen to finish fourth in the Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll and second in the league's preseason media poll. Currently, LBSU sits atop the Big West Conference standings.
• The Beach lead the Big West Conference in five statistical categories. Long Beach State sets the standard in scoring defense (53.25), scoring margin (+11.00), steals per game (13.58), turnover margin (+8.75), and assist/turnover ratio (1.10).
• A defensively strong team, Long Beach State ranks among the top teams in the nation in turnover margin and steals per game. The Beach are fourth in the country with an 8.75 turnover margin and third in the nation with 13.6 steals per game. Additionally, LBSU has forced its opponents into 22.92 turnovers per game to rank 12th in the NCAA, while the Beach's scoring defense of 53.2 ranks 13th in the nation.
• Individually, senior forward Maddi Utti leads the Big West in steals per game with 3.55, which is good for fifth in the nation.
• LBSU has three players averaging double figures in Maddi Utti (12.7 ppg), Justina King (12.3 ppg), and Jasmine Hardy (10.8 ppg)
• Utti is also the team's rebounding leader with 8.5 boards per game. She also leads the squad with 39 steals and 12 blocks.
• King tied her career-high with nine assists in the win over CSU Bakersfield. She now leads the squad in assists with 52.
• Long Beach State has officially changed the nickname for all sports other than baseball to Beach with the NCAA. Please do not refer to LBSU basketball as the 49ers.
Player Notes
• Maddi Utti is Long Beach State's leading scorer with 12.7 point per game. She alsp leads the squad with 8.5 rebounds per game, 39 steals, and 12 blocks. This season, she has recorded three 20-point performances, led the Beach in scoring six times, registered three double-digit rebounding games, and has notched a pair of double-doubles. She has also been named Big West Conference Player of the Week on two separate occasions.
• Justina King is the Beach's second leading scorer with 12.3 points per game on the season. She also leads the team with 52 assists, while also contributing 3.1 rebounds per game, 29 steals, and two blocks. In her career, she has amassed 1,120 points to rank 19th all-time at Long Beach State.
• Jasmine Hardy had a career-game against Seattle as she poured in a career-best 29 points on 11-of-14 made field goals and 7-of-9 made threes. She became just the fourth player in the Jeff Cammon era to reach at least 25 points in a game. This season she has led the Beach in scoring twice with six double-figure scoring performances. She is currently averaging 10.8 points per game.
• Kianna Hamilton-Fisher has been an integral part of the Beach offense this season. She has come off the bench and averaged 8.9 points per game to go along with 2.5 rebounds per game, 26 steals, 14 assists, and three blocks.
• Ma'Qhi Berry has been a force on the court this season contributing on both sides of the ball. Offensively, she averages 7.9 points per game with 35 assists, to go along with 2.9 rebounds per game. On the defensive end, Berry owns six blocks, while adding 20 steals.
• Lauren Green has earned the start in 10-of-11 games this season and has played an important role on the court. Although her numbers aren't overpowering, Green is a play maker. She makes things happen for the Beach both offensively and defensively and is a key component to the squad's success.
• Myrrah Joseph is averaging 4.8 points per game, 1.6 rebounds per game, while adding 12 assists, eight steals, and two blocks on the year as she has been a key reserve for Long Beach State this season.
• Patricia Chung is another cog in the Long Beach State wheel of success as the freshman guard is averaging 2.4 points per game and 0.5 rebounds per game. The scrappy Chung has helped contribute to the Beach's solid defensive efforts with a pair of steals and her stout defending.
• Kristyna Jeskeova is another key factor to the Beach's deep bench. Last weekend at UC Santa Barbara, the sophomore forward tied her career-high with 12 points to go along with five rebounds. Jeskeova is now averaging 2.4 points per game and 4.0 rebounds per game.
• Thea Mikkelsen came to the Beach all the way from Roskilde, Denmark and in her collegiate debut tallied 10 points against Biola. Since her 10-point showing in the season opener, Mikkelsen has averaged 2.1 points per game, 0.9 rebounds per game, while adding four assists, and two steals in 51 minutes of action.
• Freshman Savannah Tucker has also played an important role for the Beach as she recorded a career-high 10 points against Seattle. On the year, Tucker is averaging 2.4 points per game and 0.6 rebounds per game, while also contributing two assists and two steals.
• Emily Sullivan has also been on the court in eight games this season for a total of 46 minutes in which she has contributed six points, eight rebounds, and two steals.
• Brandy Huffhines made her collegiate debut for the Beach in the season opener against Biola. She has since seen action against Seattle and Air Force. In three games, she has seen 21 minutes of action and is averaging 0.7 points per game and one steal.
• Redshirting for Long Beach State this season are freshmen Shelby Ray and Teodora Popovic.
Scouting UC San Diego
• UC San Diego comes into the Walter Pyramid with a 6-7 overall record and a 3-1 Big West Conference mark.
• The Tritons are coming off of a week in which they went 1-1 with a 59-44 win over UC Irvine, before dropping an 82-58 contest to Hawaii.
• Sydney Brown leads the Tritons' offense with 12.5 points per game, while adding 8.3 rebounds per game. She is also tied for the team lead with 11 steals on the year.
• Alex Obouh Fegue has come off the bench eight times this season and is leading the team with 8.9 rebounds per game. Additionally, she averages 7.5 points per game, while leading the team with 19 blocks.
The Series: The Beach vs. The Tritons
Long Beach State and UC San Diego will meet for just the third time in program history. The two teams first squared off a year ago at RIMAC Arena and the Beach came away victories in both contests.
Scouting UC Irvine
• UC Irvine comes into the week with an 8-7 record and a 3-1 Big West Conference ledger.
• The Anteaters split a pair of contests last week as they defeated UC San Diego, 59-44, on Tuesday, before coming up just short against Hawaii, 77-73.
• UC Irvine has two double-figure scorers in Kayla Williams (13.4 ppg) and Chloe Webb (10.6 ppg).
• Webb is also the team's leading rebounder with 5.5 boards per game. She also adds 29 assists, 20 steals, and five blocks on the year.
• Williams, meanwhile, leads the team with 59 assists and 31 steals, to go along with 3.2 rebounds per game and five blocks.
The Series: The Beach vs. The Anteaters
Long Beach State and UC Irvine will face off for the 79th time in program history. Overall, the Beach leads the all-time series 60-19. Last season, the two teams split the series as the Anteaters took the first contest, before the Beach claimed the second.
Twice as Sweet
Maddi Utti was named Big West Conference Player of the Week for the second time of the season on Monday. Utti earned the accolades after averaging a double-double (19.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg). She kicked off the week with her third 20-point performance of the season as she led the Beach with 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and five steals in a 68-54 road victory at UC Santa Barbara. Utti followed up that performance with a 17-point, 13-rebound, two-steal, and one-block showing at CSUN on Saturday afternoon.
Hot Start
Long Beach State opened the 2021-22 campaign with an impressive 7-0 record marking the squad's best start under head coach Jeff Cammon. Additionally, the Beach tied their best start since the 1985-86 season when they kicked off the year going 7-0 under legendary head coach Joan Bonvicini. That year, the Beach went 29-5 overall and 14-0 in PCAA action en route to advancing to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.
Preseason Honors
Long Beach State women's basketball senior forward Maddi Utti was named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) 2022 Katrina McClain Award Preseason watch list. Named after two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year Katrina McClain, the annual award is in its fifth year. It recognizes the top power forwards in women's NCAA Division I College Basketball.
Defensively Strong
Long Beach State is a well-established defensive team that has led the Big West in steals multiple times over the last several seasons. This year the Beach are averaging a conference-leading 13.58 steals per game, which ranks them third in the nation. Long Beach State has forced their opponents into 22.92 turnovers per game, which is good for 12th in the nation. Leading the way for the Beach is Maddi Utti who owns a conference-leading 3.55 steals per game average, which ranks her fifth in the country.
A Grand Time
Justina King became the 26th player in Long Beach State women's basketball history to record 1,000 points in her career. She reached the milestone on Nov. 13 at Boise State as she recorded 16 points in LBSU's 61-38 victory. King joins the elite company of All-Americans LaTaunya Pollard (3,001 career points), Cindy Brown (2,696 career points), Penny Toler (2,193 career points), and Kirsten Cummings (1,740 career points). Most recently, King moved up to 19th all-time with 1,120 career points.
Next Up
Long Beach State hosts a pair of home contests next week against UC Riverside and UC Davis, respectively. The Beach and the Highlanders will play each other on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m., before facing off with the Aggies on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. Both contests will be streamed live on ESPN+.
