No. 6 Long Beach State Remains Unbeaten After Two Wins At Inland Empire Classic

With their second straight week of tournament play to start the 2021 campaign, No. 6 Long Beach State remained unbeaten as the Beach defeated Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to start Inland Empire Classic play.
Rafeal Real Vergara was a big part of both victories as he scored 11 goals to start the tournament. Vergara scored six against Pomona Pitzer and five against CMS.
The Beach (6-0) needed every one of Real Vergara's six goals against Pomona-Pitzer as the No. 19 Sagehens battled had an answer for every run LBSU went on.
With 18 seconds left in the game, Pomona-Pitzer drew a penalty against the Beach and converted the penalty shot to cut LBSU's lead to 15-14 with 16 seconds remaining in game.
The Beach held onto the lead to take the thrilling victory to start tournament play.
In the afternoon contest, Real Vergara scored five goals as the Beach defeated CMS 13-5 to remain unbeaten to start tournament play.
In the cage, junior Andrej Bosanac had nine saves and three steals in the victory against CMS.
The Beach will be back in action Sunday when they face Air Force and Redlands.
With the 6-0 start, the Beach is off to its best start since the 2016 season when LBSU went 7-1 to start.
