Cross Country Begins 2021 Season at Anteater Open

The Beach will compete in their first meet since Nov. 15, 2019.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State cross country team is set for their first meet in almost two full years as they head to UC Irvine for the Anteater Open on Wednesday, Sep. 1.

The women will compete in a 4k starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Anteater Recreational Center while the men will run a 6k beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Tiana Prince and Ryley Fick return on the women's side. The duo were the top Beach finishers at the 2019 NCAA West Regionals with times of 22:52.6 and 22:59.7, respectively. Sofia Ramos is another top runner returning for LBSU. She was the second-best runner for the team with a time of 22:15.3 at the Big West Championships back in 2019.
On the men's side, Raymon Ornelas is back for another year. The junior recorded a lifetime-best at the 2019 NCAA Regionals at 31:20.9, which was good for 76th-place. Ricky Villa and Jacob Korgan also return to the Beach. They finished second and third on the team, respectively, at the last Big West Championships.
The squad will see nine new runners this season with five freshman and four transfers. Among the transfers is a former All-American in sophomore, Yajaira Calderon, and a pair of Power Five runners, Connor Phillips and Michael Phillips, who join the Beach after time with Florida State and Syracuse respectively.
Wednesday represents the first of five Cross Country meets leading up to the Big West Championships at the end of October.
