Phillips, Scimia Pace Long Beach State at Anteater Opener

The Beach men finished second while the women finished fourth.
IRVINE, Calif. – The first meet of the 2021 season is in the books as Long Beach State competed against California Baptist, San Diego State, and host UC Irvine at the Anteater Opener on Wednesday. In their LBSU debuts, Michael Phillips and Allie Scimia paced the team for their respective squads.
In his first meet in black and gold, Michael Phillips led the team at 18:49.5 with Raymon Ornelas right behind him at 18:52.3. They finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Ricky Villa was the third quickest Beach runner at 19:25.3, good for 15th-place. Jacob Korgan crossed the line soon after with a time of 19:36.9.
In their first meet with Long Beach State, Ryan Hernandez (19:52.5), Connor Phillips (19:52.5), and Alex Kalmar (20:09.6) rounded out the Beach men. For Hernandez and Kalmar, it is the first race of their collegiate careers.
The men totaled 58 points en route to a second-place finish.
Scimia's time of 14:36.6 ledthe way for the Beach women, posting a tenth-place finish in her collegiate debut.
Not far behind her was Ryley Fick with a time of 14:43.4, good for twelfth. Anitha Graves was third-fastest for Long Beach State, posting a 14:57 mark.
Brieanna Tafoya (15:21.4) and Sofia Ramos (15:23.1) finished back-to-back, scoring in 25th and 26th, respectively. Maggie Bauer (15:21.4) and Tiana Prince (15:57.3) rounded out the Beach scorers.
The women totaled 90 points and a fourth-place finish.
The Cross Country team is off for a couple weeks, but returns to action on September 18 at the UC Riverside Invitational.
