EUGENE, Ore. – Jason Smith finished the year with a tenth-place finish in the High Jump championships in Oregon on Friday. It is the highest placement in the event at the NCAA Championships for Long Beach State since 2001.
Â
At seven feet, two and a half inches, it is the best mark in the championships for the program since Hall of Famer, Dwight Stones, won the event in 1976.
Â
With the bar starting at 2.10m (6-10.5), the senior cleared it with ease on his first attempt and then made it a perfect two-for-two clearing 2.15m (7-0.5) on his first jump as well.
Â
To stay alive in the competition, Smith would need to match his lifetime-best at 2.20m (7-2.5). After missing on his first two attempts, he would get the job done on his third jump to move on.
Â
The San Bruno native would just barely clip the bar in his final jump at the next height ending his run in the NCAA Championships.
Â
With the tenth-place finish, Smith has secured another Second Team All-American selection after finishing ninth in the Long Jump on Wednesday. He ends his collegiate career with five All-American performances, three in the outdoor season and two in the indoor season.
