COLLEGE STATION, Tex. – Jason Smith set a new school record in men's Long Jump as Long Beach State began competition at the NCAA West Regional Prelims in College Station, Texas. The Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Year jumped 26 feet, 1.75 inches to beat the record by a quarter of an inch.
Smith's record-breaking jump beats the previous mark that was set by Kemonie Briggs in 2019 and is the fourth-best jump in NCAA West Prelim history (according to USTFCCCA). It is just the second time a Long Beach State athlete has jumped 26 feet in program history.
With a third-place finish, Smith has qualified for the NCAA Championships set to take place in Eugene, Oregon next month.
Marcos Gonzalez also competed on the first day of Prelims and had a nice showing in the men's Javelin. The junior launched a 60.53m throw in his second round for his best mark of the day. He entered the weekend ranked 48th in the West Region and improved 18 spots with a 30th-place finish at 198 feet, seven inches.
None of the Long Beach State athletes will be competing tomorrow, but will return to action on Friday in the High Jump and the men's Discus. The high jump begins at 11:00 a.m. with the discus not long after at 11:30 a.m.
