COLLEGE STATION, Tex. – Jason Smith qualified for the NCAA Championships in the men's High Jump on Friday afternoon in College Station, Texas. It is the second qualifying mark he has posted at West Regional Prelims after advancing in Long Jump on Thursday.

Smith is the first Long Beach State athlete to qualify for the outdoor championships in two separate events since 2011. He qualified for the indoor championships for both jumps in 2019, but the meet was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The senior cleared 2.19m (7-2.25) on his third attempt for an eighth-place finish. It is just a quarter of an inch shy of his career-best in the event.

Porte Joie Tshiaba also competed in the High Jump and cleared 2.06m for a 31st-place finish.

The Beach had three athletes competing in men's Discus today with Alec Jones headlining the trio. The junior launched a 55.94m (183-06.00) finishing fourteenth in the event, just shy of qualifying for the Championships.

Sebastian Coleman entered the weekend ranked 48th in the West region, but bumped himself up eight spots. His throw of 51.87m (170-02.00) was good for 40th-place.

Charlie Vernoy was the third and final LBSU thrower in competition today. His throw of 49.65m (162-10.00) put him in 44th in discus.

Clare Gibson will be the final member of the Beach to compete in Texas as she will go at approximately 11:00 a.m. in the women's High Jump tomorrow morning.
