LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State track and field is set to compete in the NCAA Regional Prelims at Texas A&M this week. The four-day meet is scheduled to begin on Wednesday and run through the end of Saturday.
The Beach will be sending seven athletes with a total of eight qualifying marks.
The Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Year, Jason Smith, leads the way as he will participate in both High Jump and Long Jump this weekend. They are the same two events he was scheduled to compete in during indoor season before the championships were shut down due to COVID-19. Smith's season-best in High Jump ranks ninth in the West region, while his best in Long Jump is tied for 15th.
Porte Joie Tshiaba will be competing in the High Jump right alongside Smith with his season-best mark ranking 14th in the west region. The sophomore transfer came out second in a dominant one-two finish by LBSU at the conference championships.
Â
The Beach was dominant in the throws events this season and will have three competitors in men's Discus. Alec Jones (12th), Charlie Vernoy (23rd), and Sebastian Coleman (48th) all rank among the best in the region in the event and will each represent the black and gold in separate flights in College Station, Texas. Jones is coming off a pair of event wins, including Discus, at the Big West Championships while Vernoy was the second-highest scorer for the Beach placing in three different events.
Â
The final men's team competitor for Long Beach State will be Marcos Gonzalez in men's Javelin. The junior is coming off a third-place finish at the Big West Championships and ranks 52nd regionally.
Â
The lone Beach competitor on the women's side will be Clare Gibson in the women's High Jump. Her season-best mark is good for 34th in the region after a fourth-place finish in the conference championships.
Aaron Booth also qualified for the NCAA Postseason in the men's Decathlon, but advances straight to the Championships in Eugene, Oregon posting the 13th best mark in the region.
The top 12 finishers (no ties) in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships that begin on June 9. The West is arguably the better of the two NCAA regions, so the competition is expected to be extremely tight this week as the Beach look to send their athletes with Booth to the University of Oregon next month.

Every event will be streamed live on the ESPN family of networks.
