Dirtbags Win Sixth Straight Behind Lavallee’s Dominant Performance

5/14/2021 9:34:00 PM | Baseball

Johnathan Lavallee had another outstanding night with 12 strikeouts in eight innings.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Johnathan Lavallee dominated for the second straight start as Long Beach State (19-13, 17-12 BWC) took the series opener, 5-1, against CSU Bakersfield (18-14, 15-10 BWC) on Friday night.

A week after tossing a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts, Lavallee spun on another gem with eight innings of one-run ball. The junior right-hander allowed four hits while striking out 12 'Runners and walking none. His ERA is down to a league-leading 2.05 for the season.

The offense gave Lavallee some run support right out of the gate as Connor Kokx came in to score on a Bakersfield error after singling to lead off the bottom of the first.

Calvin Estrada would add to that lead launching a solo shot clocked at 108mph off the bat. It marks his team-leading seventh bomb and 24th RBI of the season.

Sebastian Murillo stayed red hot with his sixth double in his last nine games to get things going in the fourth. The freshman would come in to score on an RBI single from Tanner Carlson.

Carlson kept his night going coming through with a two-out triple in the bottom half of the sixth, before coming in to score on a Kokx RBI single through the left side.

Lavallee had allowed just two singles as the game went into the eighth, but CSUB finally got to him as a leadoff double followed by an RBI single would end his shutout bid. He responded with a flyout, caught stealing, and his 12th strikeout of the night.

Kokx and Carlson led the offense on Friday night as both went 2-for-4 combining for three runs scored and two RBI.

Luttrell extended his reached base streak to nine straight going 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Murillo was 1-for-3 at the dish with a walk to extend his reached base streak to eight straight games.

The Dirtbags will look to keep it going with a doubleheader tomorrow against CSU Bakersfield. First pitch from Bohl Diamond at Blair Field will be at 12:00 p.m.
