Ruiz Deals in Game One, Late CSUB Run Spoils Doubleheader Sweep in Game Two

5/15/2021 8:55:00 PM | Baseball

The Dirtbags split the Saturday doubleheader snapping their seven-game win streak.

LONG BEACH, Calif. –Long Beach State (20-14, 18-13 BWC) split the doubleheader with CSU Bakersfield (19-15, 16-11 BWC) on Saturday afternoon. The 5-0 game one victory extended the Dirtbags' win streak to seven straight games, before it was snapped in game two as they fell 2-1 to the 'Runners.

Alfredo Ruiz put together his best start of season in game one as the sophomore tossed eight shutout innings allowing just five hits and two walks while striking out four. It is the longest outing of the lefty's career as he has not allowed a run in his last 14 innings of work.

He handed the ball off to Matt Fields who tossed a perfect ninth for the combined shutout. It is the fifth shutout of the season for the Dirtbags.

Long Beach State plated a pair of runs in the first inning as Connor Kokx came in to score on a Chase Luttrell single. An error on the play put runners on second and third allowing a Brennan Rozell groundout to bring in the second run.

The Dirtbags plated runs in the third on a Sebastian Murillo squeeze play, and another in the fifth on a CSU Bakersfield error.

The final run of the ballgame came in the eighth as Alex Pimentel scored on a wild pitch after leading off the frame with a double to left center.

Ruiz was in full control throughout the entirety of his start never allowing a CSUB baserunner to reach third base and only two reached second. He needed just 97 pitches to get through his eight innings on the mound.

Game two was all about the pitching. Luis Ramirez faced some traffic, but got through seven innings of one-run ball. The right-hander surrendered five hits and walked four while striking out seven.

On the other side, the 'Runners got through the nine innings with three pitchers. The Dirtbag offense recorded seven hits and walked twice against the CSUB arms, but left 10 on-base failing to get a clutch hit when they needed it.

The lone Long Beach State run came in the fifth on a Kokx sac fly to deep left field allowing Tanner Carlson to score easily.

The 1-0 lead held until the seventh when Bakersfield pushed a run across on a wild pitch before taking the lead in the eighth on an RBI single.

For Ramirez, it marks his fifth quality start of the season. He is 2-2 with a 2.62 ERA in those five games with a 0.96 WHIP.

The Dirtbags will look to bounce back and take the series against CSU Bakersfield in the series finale tomorrow. First pitch from Bohl Diamond at Blair Field will be at 1:00 p.m.
