Jones and Katches Win Individual Titles, Men’s Team Leads after Day One of Big West Championships

Alec Jones and Hannah Katches won a pair of individual championships on day one of the Big West Championships.

IRVINE, Calif. – Long Beach State had a pair of individual champions on the first day of the Big West Championships as Alec Jones won men's Hammer and Hannah Katches won women's Javelin.
 
As a team, the men's side currently leads the field with 59 points, seven ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara. The women's team sits in third place with 18.5 points behind UCSB's 28 points.
 
Jones was the first LBSU title-winner of the day, posting a 60.97m (200-00.00) mark to win the men's Hammer Throw. The junior is the first individual conference champion in the event since 2017, but the fourth winner for the Beach in the last six years. The throw is also just the tenth in program history to reach 200 feet.
 
Less than five minutes later, Hannah Katches became the second Long Beach State champion of the day winning women's Javelin. Her mark of 41.76m (137-00.00) dominated the field beating the second-place throw by almost 11 feet. She is also the first individual champion in the event since 2017 and just the second in the last decade.
 
Michael Magula and Preston Sladek scored the first points of the day for the Beach as both finished top eight in men's Pole Vault. Magula finished second in the event with a lifetime-best mark of 5.06m (16-07.25), while Sladek came out in seventh with a 4.76m (15-07.25) mark.
 
Long Beach State had a dominant showing in the men's Hammer behind Jones claiming four of the other seven point-scoring positions. Charlie Vernoy came in second with a lifetime-best of 59.93m (193-04.00). Sebastian Coleman finished fourth at 56.88m (186-07.00), Anthony Flores finished fifth at 56.67m (185-11.00), and Anthony Sommers finished seventh at 55.59m (182-04.00).
 
Sydney Barnes and Mikayla Ray scored points for the Beach in women's Javelin and Pole Vault, respectively. Barnes finished seventh at 35.92 (117-10.00) while Ray came out in sixth with a lifetime-best mark of 3.74m (12-03.75).
 
In the final field event of the day, Marcos Gonzalez and Aaron Booth notched top eight performances in men's Javelin. Gonzalez came out third with a 60.38m (198-01.00) throw while Booth finished seventh at 55.18m (181-00.00).
 
Haley Adel and Raymon Ornelas picked up the final points for the Beach as both finished in the 10,000m runs. Adel posted a season-best 36:38.28 while Ornelas also posted a season-best time of 32:27.14.
