Smith Wins Two Individual Titles, Men’s Team Remains in First Place at Big West Championships

Jason Smith made history on Friday winning both the High Jump and Long Jump championships.

IRVINE, Calif. – Jason Smith headlined day two of the Big West Championships winning the individual titles in both High Jump and Long Jump. The senior is just the second Big West athlete to accomplish the feat in conference history.
 
As a team, the men's side continues to pace the field with 98 points, 11 ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara. The women's team sits in fift place with 34 points trailing fourth-place UC Irvine by just two points.
 
Smith cleared 2.17m (7-01.50) in High Jump en route to the victory. It is the highest winning mark in the conference championships since 2012. In Long Jump, he went 7.65m (25-01.25) on his first attempt and did not need to jump again claiming the top spot by a foot and a half.
 
Clare Gibson notched the first points for the Beach on Friday. Her mark of 1.61m (5-03.25) was good for a tie for fourth place in the women's High Jump.
 
After a second-place finish yesterday in men's Hammer, Charlie Vernoy recorded another second-place finish in Shot Put on Friday. His 16.87m (55-04.25) throw marks a new lifetime-best.
 
Porte Joie Tshiaba's mark of 2.14m (7-00.25) in High Jump was good for second. While he finished just behind Smith for the top spot, he topped third-place by five inches as Long Beach State came out one-two for the second time this weekend.
 
Malia Talavou posted a 13.00m (42-08.00) throw in women's Shot Put putting her seventh place for the event and scoring a couple of points for the Beach to wrap up the field events on day two.
 
On the track, Hailey Fune qualified for the women's 100m Hurdle final tomorrow afternoon. The true freshman was just shy of her personal best with a time of 14.55, good for seventh-fastest on the day.
 
Raleigh Adams and Justin Watterson will move on to the men's 110m Hurdle final tomorrow after placing fifth and sixth, respectively. Adams posted a time of 14.59 while Watterson came in at 14.91.
 
Kent Harris also qualified for the championships tomorrow in the 100m Dash. His time of 10.81 was good for fifth-fastest on the day.
 
Ryley Fick and Michael Simpson scored the final points of the day for Long Beach State as both placed top eight in their respective Steeplechase events. Fick finished second-place with a lifetime-best time of 10:39.19 while Simpson posted a season-best time of 9:25.37, good for sixth place.
