LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State is set to compete in the Big West Championships this weekend. The action will begin on Thursday at Anteater Stadium in Irvine.
Â
The Beach started the conference championships in record-setting fashion at the Multi-Events last week, courtesy of Aaron Booth. The junior transfer recorded the second-most points in the men's Decathlon in program history on his way to dominating win. He is the first LBSU decathlon champion since 2014.
Â
There will be three student-athletes representing LBSU as the top seed in their respective events, as well as the team having the top seed in the men's 4x100m Relay.
Â
Jason Smith has been dominant all-season long totaling six event wins and has had the top mark of every High Jump and Long Jump he has competed in. He will be the top-seed in both events this weekend.
Â
Porte Joie Tshiaba gives Long Beach State a one-two mark in men's High Jump. The sophomore transfer began his Beach career with three-straight wins before falling short to his teammate, Smith.
Â
The men's trio of Alec Jones, Charlie Vernoy, and Sebastian Coleman will occupy three of the top four seeds in both Discus and Hammer. The Beach will have one-two in both events with Jones, a two-time Big West weekly award winner, ranking number one in each.
Â
Hannah Katches ended the regular season with the best mark in women's Javelin. She is the lone female competitor representing the Beach as a top seed for the weekend.
Â
Crystal Washington has improved on her personal best in the Triple Jump three-straight times, including matching the school record her last time out. She holds the second-best mark in the Big West, just two inches behind the top spot.
Â
Clare Gibson did not compete for the first half of the season, but still won two High Jump events this season. Her best mark is less than an inch behind the top competitor in the conference as she holds the second-seed this weekend.
Â
Arturo Sotomayor will also be a two-seed, as his time in the 1500m Run was two seconds shy of the top runner in the conference. He will also be sixth in the 5000m after breaking the school record in the event earlier this season.
Â
Everything will be streamed on Big West TV and live results are available here.
