Men’s Team in First Place After Day One at Fullerton

The Long Beach State men’s outdoor track and field team dominated day one of the Fullerton Spring Invite.

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Long Beach State men's outdoor track and field team dominated day one of the Fullerton Spring Invite and currently lead the event by 14 points.

The Beach had an amazing start to the day with men's Hammer Throw. Sebastian Coleman led the way posting a personal best and conference leading mark of 60.36m (198 feet) taking home the victory.

Right behind him in second was teammate Alec Jones, who just missed his personal best with a throw of 58.55m (192-01). Anthony Sommers (4th, 57.56m) and Anthony Flores (7th, 56.73m) also scored points for the Beach.

For the third straight time, the Beach came out 1-2 in the men's Discus Throw. Alec Jones (56.83m) and Charlie Vernoy (54.97m) took the top spots out-throwing the competition by almost five feet. For Jones, it is the second consecutive event that he has set a new personal best.

Vernoy also finished fourth in the men's Shot Put with a 16.18m (53-01) mark.

The Javelin was the final throwing event for the men's side where Marcos Gonzalez (3rd, 60.73m) and Ryan Coy (6th, 51.64m) both came out in point-scoring positions.

On the women's side, Sam Perez posted a season-best 46.32m (151-11) in the Hammer Throw and qualifies her for the Big West Championships later this season.

In the women's Shot Put, Malia Talavou (4th, 12.78m) and Brianna Uipi (6th, 12.61m) picked up two of the scoring positions for the Beach. The 12.78m mark is a season-best for Talavou.

Shalee Reynolds closed out the field events of day one with a third place finish in the women's Javelin. Her mark of 28.43m (93-3) marks a personal best for the junior.

In the lone non-throwing field event, Long Beach State picked up two more point-scoring spots as Michael Magula tied for the number one spot at 4.91m (16-1.25) in the men's Pole Vault, his second-best jump ever. Nathan Garibay came out in fourth place with a mark of 4.46m (14-7.5).

As things shifted over to the track, the success continued for the Beach. Arturo Sotomayor's time of 3:45.03 in the 1500m Run was good for a second-place finish and ranks third fastest in school history.

Raymon Ornelas picked up the final scoring position with a 3:54.74 mark, a new personal best.

Sotomayor continued his successful day posting a time of 1:53.41 beating out second place by 0.27 seconds in the 800m.

Michael Simpson (9:28.52) and Jacob Korgan (9:40.73) had scoring placements in the 3000m Steeplechase, finishing third and fifth, respectively.

For the women, Ryley Fick got the scoring started on the track posting a second-place finish in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 10:46.02 shattering her career-best. Tiana Prince also scored a point-position with a time of 12:15.32.

Anitha Graves and Brieanna Tafoya finished out the first day at the Fullerton Spring Invite with a pair of point-placements in the 800m Run. Graves' time of 2:14.01 was good for second place while Tafoya posted a personal best at 2:16.72 putting her in fourth.

The Beach will finish up their time at the Fullerton Spring Invite tomorrow with action set to begin around 10:30 a.m. at the Titan Track Complex.
