The outdoor track and field team returns to action this week for the Cal State Fullerton’s Spring Invite.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The outdoor track and field team returns to action this week as they participate in the Fullerton Spring Invite on Thursday and Friday.
Everyone will be participating this week after Jason Smith was the lone competitor this past weekend.
Smith, the defending Big West Field Athlete of the Week, has won the last four events he has participated in after winning both the High Jump and Long Jump at the Stanford Invitational last weekend.
Porte Joie Tshiaba looks to stay undefeated in the High Jump. The sophomore transfer is currently 2-0 in the High Jump this season, but does not hold the team-best mark anymore after Smith's performance in Stanford.
The throwers will look to continue their string of success after a pair of event wins last time out led by Alce Jones, Charlie Vernoy, and Sebastian Coleman. The trio finished 1-2-3 in the men's Discus at the Bob Larsen Track Meet while Jones and Coleman also posted second and third place finishes in the Hammer Throw.
On the women's side, Hannah Katches will try to build on her Javelin personal best once again after shattering it last time out. She currently sits at the top of the Big West leaderboard.
Crystal Washington is also coming off a great performance last time out, taking home second in the Triple Jump at UCLA.
Sprinters Hailey Fune and Kaitlyn Williams have also had strong starts to their 2021 season finishing top three in the 100m Hurdles and 100m Dash, respectively.
As the team enters the sixth week of competition, there are student-athletes ranked top five in the Big West in 10 different events, including number one spots in women's Javelin (Katches), men's Hammer (Jones), men's Discus (Vernoy), Long Jump (Smith), High Jump (Smith), men's 200m (Smith). The team also has 1-2 placements in the Hammer, Discus, and High Jump.
