Jones Headlines LBSU Split Day with Double Victory at Jack Rose Track

The Beach picked up four wins on the day with Alec Jones notching two of them.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Long Beach State sent their sprinters to UC Riverside while the throwers competed at home at the Jack Rose Track. Alec Jones headlined the day with a double victory with wins in the Discus and the Hammer.
Jones joined the Long Beach State all-time top ten in the men's Hammer with a 61.33m mark. At 201-02, his new personal best ranks ninth-best in program history. His second victory of the day came in the men's Discus collecting his fourth win with a mark of 54.26m.
The Beach also took home the third through sixth place finishes in the men's Hammer. Charlie Vernoy (3rd, 58.60m), Sebastian Coleman (4th, 58.50m), Anthony Flores (5th, 58.03m), and Anthony Sommers (6th, 56.43) all had quality performances. For Vernoy and Flores, those marks are new personal bests.
While the team's streak of top two finishes finally came to an, Vernoy still turned in a quality Discus throw finishing fourth-place at 52.53m. Coleman was right behind him in fifth at 52.22m.
Vernoy collected his third top three finish of the day in Shot Put with a 16.21m mark.
Marcos Gonzalez rounded out the men's throwers with his fourth win of the season in men's Javelin. His mark of 61.75m was just shy of his career-best, but topped the competition by two meters.
On the women's side, Hannah Katches (34.43m), Shalee Reynolds (31.10m), and Shyann Reynolds (29.77m) took home second through fourth in the Javelin.
Malia Talavou also set a new personal-best in the Discus with a 41.86m mark. She finished eleventh in the event.
About two hours east, the sprinters competed at the UC Riverside Sprints Invitational. The men's side posted a season-best in the 4x100 as Faris Babineaux, Kent Harris, Justin Watterson, and Jason Smith combined for a time of 40.36.
Babineaux also set season-bests for himself in the 200m and 400m with times of 21.73 and 50.29, respectively. He notched top five finishes in both events.
The women had a strong showing in the 800m run claiming the second and third-place spots. Ryley Fick led the way with a new personal-best at 2:13.09 while Anitha Graves was less than a second behind at 2:13.58.
Kaitlyn Williams notched a new career-best in the 400m posting a time of 1:08.08 while Hailey Fune posted a personal best of her own with a 14.79 in the women's 100m hurdles. Both ladies finished seventh in their respective events.
The Beach will close out their week of action hosting the jump events tomorrow at the Jack Rose Track. The action will begin at 11:00 a.m.
