Long Beach State Dominates Field Events at Matador Invitational

LBSU won 11 of the 16 field events at the Matador Invitational on Friday.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State field athletes had a tremendous day winning 11 of the 16 events at the Matador Invitational on Friday.

The day started at the Hammer Toss as the Beach throwers finished one-through-five on the men's side. Alec Jones led the way with a 59.59m with Sebastian Coleman right behind him at 59.17m. Anthony Flores (55.13m), Anthony Sommers (54.88m), and Ryan Coy (51.85m) rounded out the top five finish.

Samantha Perez gave LBSU a Hammer sweep with a 46.34m throw to give her the victory. At 152 feet, the senior set a new personal best.

The Beach got a second sweep in the Javelin as Marcos Gonzalez claimed his third victory with a 58.17m throw while Hannah Katches picked up the victory on the women's side at 38.75m.

In the pole vault, Kyla Meyer picked up another win with a new personal best at 3.55m with Ciera Muscarella finishing third with a career-best 3.40m.

Preston Sladek (4.81m) and Nathan Garibay (4.36m) finished second and third on the men's side with Sladek's mark shattering his personal best.

Clare Gibson made it back-to-back wins in the High Jump with a new personal best of 1.76m. She is a perfect two-for-two in the event this season.

Crystal Washington once again beat her personal best from the week before, this time shattering it with a 12.45m mark to pick up the victory. Washington is now in a tie for third all-time in LBSU program history.

Micqwaun Wright also shattered his personal best jumping 14.62m en route to a second place finish.

The duo of Brianna Uipi and Malia Talavou finished one-two in both the Shot Put and the Discus. Uipi claimed the top spot in Shot Put at 13.06m ahead of Talavou's 12.55m mark while they switched spots in the Discus as Talavou won at 39.80m ahead of Uipi's 38.05m.

The men's discus throwers went one-through-three once again claiming the top two spots for the fifth consecutive week. Charlie Vernoy led the way at 54.29m with Jones (53.19m) and Coleman (52.12m) not far behind.

Vernoy picked up a double victory as he finished in the top spot in the men's Shot Put with a lifetime-best 16.60m. Coleman made it three top three finishes with a second-place mark of 15.80m.

On the track, Justin Watterson picked up a double victory winning both the 110 Hurdles and the 400 Hurdles. His times of 14.59 and 54.56, respectively, are both career-bests for the freshman.

Trevor Williams picked up a pair of top three finishes with a time of 22.47 in the 200m that gave him second place and a 48.99 in the 400m, good for third place.

Long Beach State will be back in action next week as they host the throws and jumps at the Jack Rose Track while the runners head to UC Riverside.
