Long Beach State Falls Short Of Comeback Against Rainbow Wahine

The Beach has five members score goals as the No. 16 Long Beach State falls to No. 8 Hawai'i.
Honolulu, Hawai'i — The Long Beach State women's water polo team wasn't able to mount a comeback as the Beach fell to Hawai'i, 10-5, Thursday night at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The No. 8 Rainbow Wahine (2-1, 1-1) got off to a fast start in the first period as they turned defensive pressure into scoring opportunities to take an early 3-0 lead with 3:11 left in the period.
No. 16 LBSU was able to put the pressure on the Wahine defense as they held Hawai'i to one goal in the period.
Anne de Kleer scored the Beach's second goal of the game after Mariah Walker drew a penalty foul on Lara Luka. At halftime Hawai'i had a 5-2 lead.
Rachel Kowalchick cut Hawaii's lead to 5-3 early in the second half when she scored on a shot that bounced off the goalie's hands.
The Rainbow Wahine answered right back with back-to-back goals. The Beach had an answer as Gabrielle Matafora-Adams and Sarah Barker both scored to cut Hawaii's lead to 7-5.
Lalelei Mata'afa scored her third goal with 1:15 left to give the Wahine an 8-5 lead heading into the final period.
Long Beach State was held scoreless in the final period as the Rainbow Wahine scored twice.
In the cage, Inbar Geva had seven saves.
The Beach will wrap up their series against Hawai'i on Saturday in a non-league contest.
