Long Beach State Falls to Hawai'i In Series Finale

Honolulu, Hawai'i — In a defensive battle, No. 16 Long Beach State fell to No. 8 Hawai'i in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Gabriella Matafora-Adams got the Beach first when she found the back of the cage in the first quarter.
After taking the lead, the Beach (0-6, 0-3) and Rainbow Wahine were tied twice before Lara Luka gave Hawai'i (3-1, 1-1 Big West) a 3-2 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Hawaii's Lucia Gomez de la Puenta scored the lone goal of the period on a power play with 6:52 remaining in the half.
The rest of the period was a defensive battle as neither team scored as Hawaii took a 4-2 lead at the break.
After Hawai'i, took a 5-2 lead early in the third period, Mariah Walker drew a penalty on a defender and scored the 5-meter penalty shot to cut Hawaii's lead to 5-3.
Junior Elena Kotanchyan scored 45 seconds later to cut the Rainbow Wahine's lead to 5-4.
Hawaii took a 6-4 at the end of the third quarter after Lalelei Mata'afa scored on a power play.
Matafora-Adams scored the Beach's lone goal and her second of the match in the fourth period as Hawaii outscored the Beach 3-1.
In the cage, Kate-Green Jones had 13 saves.
