Dirtbags Fall in Sunday Matinee, Split Series with Cal Poly

The Dirtbags could not overcome the early deficit and fell 5-1 to the Mustangs in the series finale.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (8-8, 8-8 BWC) could not overcome an early deficit against Cal Poly (16-12, 6-6 BWC) falling 5-1 in the series finale. It gives the Dirtbags a series split with the Mustangs.
Cal Poly pushed a run across in the top half of the first without recording a hit and their pitching never gave it up.
Connor Kokx led the bottom half of the first off with an infield single to extend his reached base streak. The sophomore has now reached safely in 17 straight games going back to the final game of the 2020 season.
The Mustangs would add two more runs in the third on an RBI double and a bases loaded hit by pitch which also spelled the end of a short outing for Dirtbag starter Jack Noble. The right-hander threw just 2.1 innings allowing three earned runs on two hits and three walks.
The lone Long Beach State run came in the bottom of the third as Aidan Malm would lead off with a double off the wall in left-center and eventually come in to score on a Chase Luttrell sacrifice fly.
The Mustangs added two more runs in the eighth, but the Dirtbags could not get any offense going to try and rally back.
Cal Poly reliever Bryan Woo tossed 5.2 shutout innings, only allowing three hits before being removed due to an arm injury in the bottom of the ninth.
Long Beach State is off next weekend due to their conference-only schedule. They will be back in action on April 23 when they start their series with UC Santa Barbara.
