The Beach picks up first win of season, and Shana Welch picks up first win as head coach of women's water polo program.
Long Beach, Calif. — After falling behind 2-0 after the first quarter, No. 16 Long Beach State rallied to defeat No. 19 Loyola Marymount 8-6 Saturday afternoon at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
Sarah Barker and Elena Kotanchyan each scored two goals as the Beach (1-6) was able to earn a hard-fought win against the Lions.
Along with the Beach picking up its first win of the season, Shana Welch recorded her first victory as the head coach of the LBSU women's water polo program.
"We say it's not about the wins and losses," Welch said. "It's great to get a win. This team deserved a win. They've been working hard, so I'm happy for them as a team and that's going to propel us through the next few weeks."
Welch is in her seventh season with the team and officially took over as head coach last June after serving as the associate head coach last season when the team went 12-6 before the season was canceled due to COVID-19.
Before Welch was the associate head coach she served as an assistant coach for five years.
